I am starting to dig twitter.

I just really like reading about coke and the peep show and the stupid things Nikki Sixx says.

You shout things into the void of the internet. Sometimes, people shout back.

Lately, I've been finding myself answering "uh, we met on twitter..."* when someone asks me how I know someone. Seriously, I've made maybe around 10 friends on twitter who I hang out with in real life.


*this is now more frequent than "uh, we met on a vegan forum..."


eta: really, this not because I'm awesome or anything, but because I live in a transient city full of people looking to make friends.

can someone tell me:

how to retweet things that are too long? my phone won't let me it seems, but other people do it and it just goes to a link if it's cut off.

how/why do random people follow me based on what I tweet? even when I don't use a # thing? I tweeted something about books and now I have these book people/bot followers

I think there's some twitlonger service or something that'll let your tweet trail and require a person to click on the automativally included link? I kinda find those annoying because it makes me work too hard to read something. If I can't modify something to be retweetable, I won't.

And those bots have something set up so that they're alerted to a user who's tweeted about a certain word or word combo, regardless of hashtags. My most recent one was about breast augmentation because I tweeted about our provincial health ministry not covering breast reduction after 2011. I usually end up blocking them.

I don't know how twitter looks on your phone, but on the site there's a 'retweet' option underneath everyone's tweets when you hover over them. You can also use bit.ly to convert links to shortened urls.

Also, even if you don't use tags, all of your tweets are searchable. So yeah, if you mention movies or books or anything that people can sell you stuff related to, you will probably get a bunch of spam followers.

I always wonder how people decide what to use as a status on facebook and what to tweet. Obviously, I'm over thinking this!

Is it important to block them? I don't really pay attention to them, but I remember that a year or so ago your twitter could easily be hacked by followers if you didn't block them. Or at least, mine was, a couple of times.

I enjoy following NHL players and marveling at how they so often fail to even make 140 characters make sense. Also--following BC Ferries has saved my asparagus more than once.

If you report someone for spam, they're automatically blocked.

i only log into facebook a few times a week and rarely update my status, but sometimes i use twitter as a train-of-thought type thing... like if i'm making dinner, or watching tv, or doing nothing at all.

I don't facebook too much about annoying things in my daily life, those are for tweeting. I only use twitter on my droid; it keeps me busy on my commutes to work and helps to prevent me from reading books.

I block them more in a fork you! sort of way.

I can't get on twitter from my phone, so my annoying random post are on facebook.......

Apparently he doesn't understand twitter.

I signed up for Twitter today and I do not really understand it at all. The "old Twitter" looks and works just fine, but the "new Twitter" is so forking confusing! There's two columns all the time? Still, I figured out how to add like 85 internet vegans to my follow list (or whatever that's called?) and reading about what they're cooking and doing is pretty neat. Being so confused by this whole to-do is making me feel exceedingly old.

Has anyone had problems with "new twitter" using firefox? I used to use old twitter because new twitter didn't work with firefox, but now that's no longer an option so I have to access twitter through safari. And I don't want to use chrome if I can help it!

I keep forgetting that I have a twitter. I am not really sure what to tweet about because I moan about the usual stuff on facebook so am I supposed to just put the same thing into twitter? That seems like cheating or something.
