After much thought, visits and consideration...we are making the move to PDX. Just going to do it and let me just say, it is very exciting to be in the middle of planning a get up and go type of move. Any thoughts, suggestion, shiitake talking...anything anything???? I would love to hear it all.

p.s. We are also looking to make some cool friends. We love drinking, baking, biking, chili cook-offs, dogs, farts and much much more.

My first suggestion (unless you have loads of savings) is have a job before you come, an "in" somewhere or a bad-ass resume. Or if your job is a nationwide company maybe you can be transfered.The jobs available here can be few!

In *general* I think N, NE (excluding mississippi and alberta areas) and the outer fringes of PDX are cheapest to live in.

Also, I read that last sentence in your post as "dog farts and much much more". Hah!

I have to agree a million times on the job front - it's pretty dire.

If you guys have that figured out, awesome!! I live in outer SW and don't recommend it. It's cheaper, and I'm super close to some great little restaurants/stores (Green Wok, Laughing Planet & Barbur World Foods) but I'm dying to move back to SE.

Thanks for the replies, links and all the information. Really excited to move and that jazz. We have been told by quite a few different people to move to the SE part and last time we were there in December we checked it out and pretty much spent the day walking around the area.

I'm moving to Portland on a whim. There's some good info in here. I will be visiting for the first time during the beginning of July and moving there at the end of July. The town seems awesome. I'm a recording engineer/composer/musician and the market looks more promising than the KC area. Currently, I have one friend that lives there, hooking me up with a place to stay for the first few weeks. I'm sure I'll meet plenty of folks, but it would be cool to have someone that can show me some neat spots, help find a roommate that doesn't cook meat in the kitchen, or a potluck buddy...

Is there a neighborhood flooded with musicians/artists, or they pretty well distributed everywhere?

I would say they're everywhere, with an emphasis on NE Alberta-ish, but really, everyone's everywhere.

NE is the best place in portland to live IMO!

We lived in SE for the first year plus we were here and then moved to NE/Bordering on N portland for the last 6 months. I really loved both neighborhoods, but I feel a bit more comfortable in NE. NE reminds me more of New Orleans what with the Popeye across the street and all. I can walk to all sorts of places from both neighborhoods. I think that's the most important thing to consider about anywhere you choose.

They are everywhere, can't move an inch without bumping into one. Be warned that there are a high percentage of recording engineers in town, too, from basement note wranglers to high buck, top-of-the-line moguls. Just a heads up.

Thank you for the warning, but that's actually the reason why it's a such a good option for me. When there's a lot of engineers in town, that's normally a good indicator that business is plentiful. I can make a living in any city with a music scene (including KC), but Portland just seems to be the next city I need to stop at for a while.

Awesome, good luck with the move! Portland is a nice city to be playing music, for sure. If you know your shiitake, I'm sure you won't have a problem. I didn't mean to make it sound so ominous.

I really wish my job was in Portland. I would move there in a heartbeat.

I worked in Beaverton on internships for a total of 9 months (6 months + 3 months). I loved it so much and I miss PDX dearly.

12 days before I move to PDX, I get a baller-ass offer recording, mixing and writing beats full-time for a wealthy rapper in KC, and I just can't justify passing it up. Last time I posted in this thread was before I ever visited Portland. It's my home that I never knew was home. I fell IN LOVE!!! We'll be apart for a little while longer... I'll visit when I can and come home soon!
