Can anyone recommend a good place to hang out for an hour or two with luggage on a Friday morning around 8? Breakfasty options and close to the subway preferred.

I'd say 'Snice even though it isn't in the east village, but it's by a subway and it's easy to get to the east village from there. and you can take the train directly there from the airtrain at JFK on the E train. i dont think there are many other places open that early with places to sit and vegan options. you might find a random bagel place, but most of them are small and don't have many seats.

I agree that 'Snice is probably best, but if the weather is nice, you can also try Atlas. I say if the weather is nice because it's tiny inside, but they have outdoor seating too and I doubt they'll hassle you if you're out there a while.

i also should have mentioned that 'snice is awesome! it's one of my favorite places to eat in NYC. you should go there for lunch or dinner, too and get a vegan panini (but all of the sandwiches are really good)

That's also true. And I'm kind of addicted to their apricot bars.

ooh yeah, those are the best! atlas is a good place for breakfast, too! but i think it's supposed to rain this weekend. it's just hard to find a place in NYC that isn't tiny where you won't feel weird sitting there for a few hours.

i wonder if mel is here today or next friday?

Thanks for the suggestions! This was posted in a bit of a panic from the tarmac when we discovered that our friend's flight was delayed by a couple hours (we were supposed to land at the same time), and they had all the rental apartment information. Thankfully, it all worked out, and their plane was only an hour behind, so we just partied at JFK with cucumber sushi rolls and the 80's rock they played on the PA.

How is/was the trip?

It was fun! Perhaps we could have done more planning, since we ended up wandering around a lot while things weren't open yet, but we had a few set itinerary plans that we had to work around, which made scheduling tricky. The weather was excellent though, sunny but cool, perfect for hiking around the city.

We ended up eating Atlas (lunch/dessert and another late night dessert), Blossom, Blossom Cafe, Lula's, Babycakes, Columbus Circle Whole Foods (emergency back up when we trekked out to Murray Hill for a closed restaurant and had to find something quick before meeting with friends), Foodswings, Angelica's Kitchen, Candle 79, Curly's, and Cowgirl Bakery. I really wanted Lan and Counter, but their hours just didn't work with our plans.

Sounds like you made out pretty well! What were your and Shane's favorites and least favorites?

We both really liked Curly's. I had a crabcake poboy that was super delicious and also GIANT. I saved half for the plane. Their fries totally hit that fast food spot, really salty and with that processed, McDonaldsish taste.

Angelica's was a bummer. It was a last minute back up when we realized Lan wasn't open yet and we had to grab something quick. Really boring food. Lula's was also a bit disappointing. The flavors seemed really muted, but the texture was nice.

Both Blossoms were great. Candle 79 was pretty good. Their oyster mushrooms were not as good as Millennium's, but holy shiitake cannolis. I almost made a second order. I ordered almost identical entrees at Blossom and Candle (piccata/scallopini). Blossom had better seitan, but Candle had better sauce. I also really loved the jam 'n cream biscuits at Babycakes.

I'll have to try some of that next time I'm there! Hmm, I wonder if you would have preferred Stogo to Lula's. They don't have cones though or the crazy toppings you can get at Lula's. And yeah, Angelica can be pretty boring. There are a few things worth getting though. There's some kind of seitan sandwich they have that's pretty flavorful.

How was Cowgirl? I don't know anyone who's been yet.
