I'm from there. Springfield, not the cemetery.

I wasn't vegan when I lived there, but it's always a hassle to find good vegan food or even ingredients anywhere but Food Fantasies when I go back. It's getting better (I had a portabello sandwich at Dublin Pub), but Springfield is the birthplace of the Horseshoe. And Cozy Dog.

It's been about 5 years since I lived there, so these are the only places that really stuck in my mind. But the VegGuide for Spfld looks pretty promising.
-Holy Land Diner is pretty sweet. Are they still doing the Saturday buffet?
-Magic Kitchen is some of the best Thai food ever. Ever.
-Little Saigon is delicious. Lots of Thai and Vietnamese dishes. And smoothies. Yum.
-Gateway to India is awesome, but I don't know if anything is vegan. I'm sure they have something.
-Osaka is so so so good. The mango tofu is the stuff of dreams.

If anyone reads this thread and goes to Grab-A-Java (the Sixth street location, preferably), tell them Kristina sent you. I worked there for 4.5 years. Best job/bosses/coffee EVER!

Magic Kitchen? Boo! Thailand Cuisine (behind MCL) is way better! And Gateway to India always has something vegan, MBM eats there probably once a week.

If you worked at Grab-A-Java, then you know Sarah Lazare! She was a friend of mine when the Asylum was still around.

I totally know Sarah! I haven't talked to her in years, though. She moved away to school before I worked there, but we had a lot of the same friends, so she was always around in some respect. This was post-Asylum, when it was called Rise. Her parents are seriously the best bosses I've ever had, and probably ever will have.

GAJ rules. I met my current roommate (and one of my best friends) when we both worked there years ago. She's moving back in May to finish school sans distractions, and she'll start working there again. And she'll start a war with you over the Magic Kitchen/Thailand Cuisine exchange we just had here. She said the fried tofu she had there tasted like tree bark.

I've only had Magic Kitchen once and they had tiny little noodles. I prefer fat, wide noodles. Plus, Magic Kitchen doesn't have Mona, the little old lady who's always running Thailand Cuisine. My order of Thai restaurants in Springfield is Thailand Cuisine, Little Saigon, Taste of Thai. I liked Osaka but they're always busy and a little more expensive than the other three.

I've never been to Grab-A-Java because I don't drink coffee, but my sister used to go there all the time. I didn't know Sarah's parents ran GAJ until I ran into her in Washington (what!) a couple years ago.

We should do a meetup. I'm not there, but it's just a... drive. A pretty decent drive, but I'm sure it would be lovely and scenic.

I've only eaten at Gateway to India (yes, please) and Holy Land Diner (still doing the buffet), because I'm too scared to venture out. I might have some more courage now..

What do you order at Little Saigon? Is that on Wabash? I went in once, looked over the menu, got nervous and left. Oops.

What about Thailand Cuisine? I'm feeling like I have to go out for dinner now!

At Little Saigon, there's the yellow curry and pad thai. At Thailand Cuisine, there's their swimming tofu and pad thai, and there's a vegetarian menu that has more options.

They're both on Wabash, Little Saigon is across from Food Fantasies and Thailand Cuisine is next to the Monty's behind MCL Cafeteria.

We should! And MBM and I should get off our butts and drive up north someday but it's difficult for us because I'm in Carbondale until the end of this semester and I have the car. We'll probably make at least one trip up north this summer.

I'm looking forward to living in Springfield again, MBM and I are going to be all over the interurban bike trail once the weather warms up!

I'm more inclined to make a drive down to Springfield than I am to go to Chicago, even though I'm closer to the city. I prefer the country/suburban life. I know y'all make a trek to the Rockford area (or am I mistaken?) so maybe we could meet somewhere along the way. Rhizzo is sort of around these parts, too (I'm in the western suburbs). Maybe on your way up, we could all congregate somewhere? Or maybe she would be down for a road trip to Springfield with me during the summer?

MBM and I have not been to Rockford. I think the last time we made a trip north was to see the Smoking Popes and Bayside at the Metro in 2006. It was the same week as the 2006 tornado. It's a funny story, I come home from Iraq for two weeks of leave, get back to Springfield for a couple days, go up to Chicago to see that concert, and come back to Springfield only to find that a bunch of my favorite places were wrecked by a tornado! I missed out on all of the fun! Or at least all of the carnage.

Oh and I went up there to see a Fire game last season. I'll probably see more should the opportunity arise.

Sorry for my misunderstanding, brian! Then I guess those of us that are more up north will just have to make a trip down to see those of you closer to the middle of the state, because I don't think there is anything mid-way that would make for a great place to meet... unless someone knows something I don't know (which is extremely possible.) Plus, kdub is in Springfield!

I think that we have a new member on the boards from Joliet, too. Maybe she will find her way to this thread.

I updated the OP to add some more useful stuff than a dumb comment. If you know of a place to eat or a specific dish that's vegan, let me know and I'll add it! I'll also add fun stuff like community events in the Things to Do section. It may be a little out of touch for a couple months because I'm still wrapping up this semester in Carbondale but I'm in town about once a month.

Hunan for sushi. They do an unlimited "buffet," where you pick your own rolls. They'll modify pretty much any roll. I've never ordered of their actual menu, but they have that too.

SVA does a monthly potluck/video at the library downtown. The potluck is vegan. We went once in the middle of winter and it was pretty small.
These are the dates for the next few months from their website:
Tuesday, April 12
Monday, May 9
Wednesday, June 22

If you haven't been to the mall to see the colossal colon, you're missing out! Pictures coming soon!
