.... moving to a foreign country and city where you don't know a single person?

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I've decided to move to Helsinki (by myself) to do an 8-month work term, and in my heart, I know that it is the right thing to do, but I am so scared that I'll be lonely and miserable because I won't meet anyone. Obviously I have to be as proactive as possible to avoid feeling that way. I have moved to a city alone where I knew no one before and that worked out, but I was in school so I met most of my immediate friends from there.

So I want to hear about similar experiences that you've had. Did you have a hard time? Did you make tons of friends? Tell me!

Thanks!

That sounds amazing! Helsinki seems great!

I first moved to Munich for an internship. I didn't know a single person but in the first week I was here I met a ton of people, from my ex bf to my best friend. The best way is to make friends with one person who knows lots of people and then the rest is done.
And not being afraid to talk to strangers! If you show you're open, people will be open too.

Have fun, and when's the next Helsinki meet up?

I've never done that but it seems like an opportunity of a lifetime, go for it and don't look back!

Plus, you'll be in europe and although its not central, I say go visit other parts of europe. My parents lived in Germany for 3 years when I was a baby and they did a lot of exploring and saw stuff they wouldn't normally have seen.

I moved to Istanbul without knowing anyone. I found it easy to meet people (through couchsurfing mainly) but even so, I got lonely sometimes when I realized that despite making many new friends, we were more surface-level friends. Not deeply connected friends. If that makes sense. But all that changed, and now some of my loveliest, closest friends are peeps I met in Istanbul.

Go for it. Be open and friendly. If you meet someone nice, exchange phone numbers and/or make plans to do something with them. If you put yourself out there you'll be fine! (Also, couchsurfing gatherings and/or hosting csers are great, great ways to meet like-minded, fascinating people.)

I lived in Japan and didn't know anyone. I also didn't know Japanese. I've also visited other countries and have stayed for a month or so. I find that there is always a group of "foreigners" that cling together at first. I don't know about Helsinki but there's usually a community. After a while of kicking it with the other foreigners, I usually get involved in activities with the folks of that particular country. For instance, in Japan it was Ikebana and Karate; in Guatemala it was weaving and so on. And for me, I usually found a Christian community to join.

I guess the truth is at first it could be a bit lonely. I use that transitional time to breathe and explore. After that initial period I find things that I love to do and meet people.

Plus, you still have us here at the PPK.

It's not the same because I moved here with my husband but we didn't know a single person. And neither of us had ever even been to Vienna before. I'm not gonna lie and tell you that it's never lonely but it is absolutely worth it. It's much harder to meet people when you don't speak the language and can't freely join clubs and do volunteer work but if you show up and try, people will be accommodating. You'll know people from work and you can use the internet to find awesome vegans like i did! Do it!

I was lucky enough to just travel to a foreign country at a young age. And while I traveled with a group, it was a group of strangers. I would do it again. If I had/ have the opportunity I would let my kids (depending on where). It is worth it.

When I moved to Oz I didn't know a soul. I made friends with the other foreigners at work, and I also joined meetup.com and looked for people with the same interests as me (for me, it was pub quizzes). I also joined a singles' group and met lots of great people that way. Have fun, that's what's most important!!
