Substitutions of hard to get foreign items!

They look the same. I've seen it in Brighton so I bet you could find some in London...

The one in Infinity is labelled Maftoul.

What do people use instead of rotelle tomatoes with chilli? Obviously tomatoes and some type of chilli, but how hot are they?

Rotelle has jalapeños in it, so probably a tin of chopped tomatoes and a few diced jalapeños would work.

when i make ctate's queso, i just substitute a 50/50 mix of tinned chopped tomatoes and sliced jalapenos for the Rotel. works fine, i think!

Thanks both. I used some jalapeño and it worked out well.

Not really a foreign item, but has anyone seen frozen artichokes anywhere? They crop up in a couple of my recipe books and I'm interested to see how they are compared to tinned, which I hate, and jarred, which I adore.
