Good ideas here!! Excited to help promote this! Some thoughts: - Every jurisdiction seems to have different rules. Sometimes an official will say you need a permit when you really don't if you're doing a one-time bake sale, so you can politely ask them to double-check. But sometimes you do need a permit, but that may be very doable. One common rule is: if a food item is generally considered safe at room temp (e.g., cookies), it doesn't need to be refrigerated. We've also done feed-ins where an official came aroud with a thermometer. Doable! Most officials in my experience do not seem to realize that vegan cupcakes are way safer than dairy cupcakes, or the rules haven't caught up to veganism. - Sometimes the rules are more lax for giveaways. If you do a vegan "bake-in," you may be able to get it funded by VegFund. Details: http://www.veganbakesale.org/veganbakes ... nding.html- Some general tips on bake sale locations, regulations, finding bakers, etc. are here: http://www.veganbakesale.org/veganbakes ... nding.html

I don't know about the foot traffic in Central Square, but it seems like the kids like it? Everytime I have ever been to harvest on a Sunday the cafe and the grocery store are packed, its definitely worth looking into! Out front wouldn't really work. BUT they do allow the farmer's market in the parking lot sometimes (the one on the east side of the building, behind Shalimar), so they may allow us to use that space. Are we still considering the first weekend in May? We're members at Harvest and I go all the time, so I could ask about the possibility when I go in later this week.

I think near Harvest would be great!
Also, I spoke with a woman on Tuesday at the health dept. for Somerville. She said that we might not need a health permit, but would definitely need an event permit. She said there'd be plenty of time to get these things by the beginning of May, and she'd get back to me by the end of the week. I haven't heard from her yet but will give a call on Tuesday morning when she's back in the office.

I've been super busy lately so I haven't had much time to research locations. Any new developments?

Just wanted to write a quick update on what's being done to possibly have the bake sale in Davis Square. They're sending me the application for a permit to have a public event and then they have to have it back by April 22 for it to be brought up at the next city clerk meeting. They said that Davis Square is open right now for May 7, 14, and 21. I also need to go into the health dept (heard back today) to fill out a temporary food permit. It sounds like it'll be okay to cook in our own homes as long as the items do not need to be refrigerated (but I'll have to see after filling out the forms for sure). I'm planning on going to the health dept tomorrow. I know these dates are after the worldwide vegan bake sale dates, but I know there's lots of vegan bake sales throughout the year nationwide. Is that okay with everyone? I think some people from the Boston Vegan Collective might be interested in cooking or helping out too so I could mention the dates at the next meeting too.

Katherine, Thanks so much for doing all of that! Like I said in my email. I'd rather do the bake sale a week later than not at all!

Despite the dates listed on their website, WWVBS will post events occurring outside of that range.

Same here with the apologies not being active. No one seems much interested in JP, and I don't have contacts elsewhere. I think Davis area would be brilliant.

If all else fails, what about the Lucy Parsons Center in South Boston?

Would it be inside or outside at the Lucy Parsons Center? Is it free?

I don't know. I've never been there but I know they let people use the space and I am pretty sure Boston Vegan Assoc has had a bakesale or two there before. I haven't contacted them, I wanted to wait and see how things played out for Davis Sq

Hi,
It would cost $100 for the temp. food permit to have the bake sale in Davis Square. The good news is, if it went well, it would only be 25 dollars to hold subsequent events the rest of the year. What do people think about the price? If people think that is not a bad price, maybe if 10 people put in $10 that wouldn't seem so bad. Does anyone have a preference for a date in May? Mother's Day is May 8th so I would worry a little bit about people being around to bake that weekend, but maybe people don't have obligations this whole weekend? Do you think there are enough people to bake? Does anyone know if Saturday or Sunday is busier in Davis?

I'd totally be willing to throw in $10 or $15.

the 7th doesn't work for me....
i could potentially throw in $10-->
is the plan for the proceeds to go to charity? (and if so, would the first $100 cover the permit price?)

I can definitely give as much as possible, at least $10, maybe more as long as my car stops breaking down!

Hi,
The proceeds would go to charity. I'm not sure, but I don't think that the first $100 would work to cover the permit since all of the money is supposed to go to charity. That's just a guess though. Right now it looks like we'd have 5 or 6 people to cover the cost of the permit. I know a handful of other people who would be willing to cook with enough notice. Would you want to meet to discuss date and fill out the paperwork together?

I think whatever we do, we should do it asap! I'm okay with throwing in money towards the permit and not being reimbursed from the proceeds, the more money we can send to Sunny Meadow the better!

Hey, I forgot to reply to this. I can throw in $10 or however much is needed and I don't care if I don't get it back.
