Last week, before the flu hit me, I got really into the New York City Ballet 2 workout. I danced ballet for 18 years and I miss it SO much, but I've been too frustrated by how my body doesn't work like it used to be happy in any adult class. But this workout, in the comfort of my own home (with no mirrors thank god), was so fun! I think you need at least a bit of knowledge of ballet terminology to not have to keep interrupting the movement, though I'm sure after a few times you'd have it down. The time really flew by, and that never happens when I exercise. I was incredibly sore the next day, but in a good way. Also, a workout DVD without incredibly irritating music? Yes, please! I want to try the first one, too.
Anyone tried this workout? Also, holy crepe holding my arms in second position for long periods of time...I totally forgot how much that sucks!

Yep! I do barre workouts regularly (at a studio, in a class) and they kick my butt!! Also, the awesome boychucker and I did a swap and she sent me the NYC ballet workouts! I haven't gotten through both of them yet, but they are pretty awesome- and I love how the NYC ballet dancer's bodies are so healthy, athletic, and fit. I'm pretty sure that in the first DVD they explain the ballet terminology; I'll check it out tomorrow. http://forum.theppk.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2903&start=0&hilit=ballet+barre+workouts

I have not heard of this, but it sounds awesome! Have not danced in almost a year :-( and have been trying to be happy with yoga, but this sounds like so much more fun!

It really is! The combination you learn at the end is super fun, and it's so nice when you're grunting and groaning to be reminded to "feel the (classical) music" rather than have some workout nazi tell you to think about bikini season.

I have the first one, but haven't seen the second one. I also miss dancing, but last time I tried it for real I was too frustrated that my body didn't work the way it used to. Nothing like going from triple pirouttes, to being dizzy doing a single to make you realize you are not longer a ballerina. Now it's barre workouts, and wii just dance for me. Although I wonder if I'd like trying something new like taking a bollywood or ballroom class-not that I can find any for adults especially without a dreaded recital, and zumba-ick (sorry to the zumba lovers out there, wasn't my thing). Sadly I miss the choreography part of it, well that and my ballerina body.

That sounds great, I'm a ballet dancer who is currently out of commission due to a torn ACL. This sounds like a good way to at least do something until i get it fixed in the spring (i'm going crazy).

I dance--usually 3-4 times a week, ballet, jazz, tap, and pointe(i'm just starting to learn that last...at my age!). But I haven't been in weeks because i've been in a patch of no pay at work, and i really should see if i can borrow these dvds someplace myself before i start getting really out of condition.

Has anyone tried the vegan ballet shoes? Are they any good? I like the bloch ones that already have the elastics sewn in, but I feel HORRIBLE about the leather on the soles...

I have the Grishko vegan shoes and like them a lot. I'm not a serious dancer but I can't tell the difference in feel between vegan and non-vegan.
Edit to say that you have to sew the elastic in yourself but its really no big deal.
