I posted this a month ago! Somewhere... It's really creepy, isn't it? I hate that I agree with him about anything. I think, like Clinton, he's not actually eating strictly vegan and plans to eat the occasional seafood.

There is a real difference between ethical vegans and people who merely adhere to a vegan diet. But I think it is great and I hope he does well with his new eating plan. If the Glenn Becks of the world go vegan, we're making it into the mainstream! Just think of how all of you who have conservative families ranting about your diet can now retort "If it's good enough for Glenn Beck, it's good enough for me!"

Oh man, how weird. But I think we need to remember this: Jill wrote: There is a real difference between ethical vegans and people who merely adhere to a vegan diet. As long as he doesn't come out and say he nearly died or some shiitake.

Wait a minute....isnt this a GOOD thing? Who cares why someone stops eating meat? Lots of people start out for one reason and keep doing it for others. Animals and the environment dont give a crepe why. Bottom line is less meat and dairy are being consumed, and in the case of someone like Glenn Beck, it is someone seemingly unlikely, which means publicity for a vegan diet in new places.
Do we really have to like someone to be glad they aren't eating meat?

Do we really have to like someone to be glad they aren't eating meat? I agree, I mean the "Hitler was a vegetarian" thing didn't stop me before! But I am suspicious that he's doing it just to complain later that he nearly died.

lavawitch wrote: Do we really have to like someone to be glad they aren't eating meat? EXACTLY. I don't need to hang out or be friends with everyone who adopts the same dietary choices as I do. Obviously, GB is a moron, but I'd still be totally happy if he never eats another animal, or the by-products of its exploitation. (I mean just think of the suffering that would be prevented if every moron in the world went vegan!)

It's weird because he's so not the type you'd expect to go vegan, but whatever. Good for him. Good for the animals he doesn't eat.
It's going to suck if he quits and cries (literally?) about how he's malnourished, though. My right-wing dad and his wife practically worship this guy, and I'll never hear the end of it Glenn Beck starts talking shiitake about veganism.

Do we really have to like someone to be glad they aren't eating meat? I totally agree! I have met a lot of vegans and vegetarians (as well as omnis) that I am not too crazy about, but I think it is great that he is trying it out. Another great point is that sometimes people start being vegan or vegetarian for one reason and stick with it for another. I don't care for Glen Beck at all, but I think it is wonderful that he is vegan or at least trying it out.

I don't think anyone here is truly upset Glen Beck went vegan, people are just being silly. You have to admit, it's just about the weirdest thing to happen ever. ashley wrote: It's going to suck if he quits and cries (literally?) about how he's malnourished, though. I will say I am concerned about this.

The word "vegan" was coined by Donald Watson and his wife in 1944 when they broke away from the vegetarian society of the UK. It refers to someone who has the ethical belief that it is wrong to exploit animals. Eating a vegan diet doesn't make a person vegan the way eating kosher doesn't make someone a Jew.

I'd be thrilled if this is true, what ever his reasons may be. But, of course, I am still expecting him to do some something very Glenn Beck-ish, like claim that he can still eat meat so long as Sarah Palin killed it or something equally lame.

I think this sort of splitting hairs isn't really very constructive in the mainstream media. If he calls himself a vegetarian, people think he still eats cheese and eggs. If he spends 10 minutes explaining what he does or doesn't eat so as not to use the word vegan to refer only to diet and not lifestyle, then 90% of his listeners have tuned out. I don't see this as a harmful confusion along the lines of "vegans" who only eat salmon who spawned sideways on Wednesdays in a particular stream in Scotland or some such nonsense. Baby steps usually come before giant strides. I think many people do understand that there is a difference between diet and lifestyle, but I don't think belaboring the point in the mainstream media right now accomplishes very much, especially since there is an increasing amount of positive vegan publicity. I know a lot of people who adopt the lifestyle after the diet. I have a friend right now who loves tofu but is omni, however, I've noticed him asking me questions lately, so there is a lot percolating in the background. I don't think he is ready to do it yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is in a few months.
