I'm going to be in Berkeley for one day next weekend. I've never been before. It sounds like there are so many great food options! What would you say is the one BEST place? I'm probably only going to be able to go to one spot to eat.

Anything else there that I must simply see/do?

I haven't spent much time around Berkeley, but I always make a point of going to Cha Ya whenever I'm passing through.

Flaco's! All vegan mexican place! It's unique and delicious and the owner is SO nice.

Cha Ya is a "must eat." There's one in the Mission in San Francisco as well, in case you pass by that way.

Cha Ya is excellent, don't get me wrong. Flaco's, however, is a consistently amazing, unpretentious vegan Mexican joint right next to public transit. It's also the best place to get vegan taquitos. Period. Finally, their hot avocado salsa is actually really spicy. I respect a place that doesn't fork around with hot sauce. I vote Flaco's.

Flacos is on the far South end of Berkeley, so if you're in that neighborhood go there. If you're in Downtown or North Berkeley, Cha Ya will be closer, and as much as I love Flaco's you can't go wrong with Cha Ya either (deep fried avocado sushi all the way).

If you're in far West Berkeley (like, right next to the bay), go to Vik's Chaat House. It's not all vegan, they have some great vegan Indian food and fresh coconuts at a really decent price.

Nature's Express (in North Berkeley) is good fast food, but slightly overpriced and inconsistent in terms of service. My impression of Herbivore (in Downtown Berkeley) is only slightly better.

Avoid Cafe Gratitude. The food is good, but the prices are too high for what you get and the service is poor (at least at the Berkeley location). I have to concede, however, that their raw desserts are amazing.

And, of course, do Cinnaholic (downtown) for dessert!

If you have any specific questions), I'd be happy to answer them. I've been in Berkeley for about two and a half years, and have a decent sense of where to go and where to avoid.

There is so much in this post that I agree with. (Have actually somehow not been to Flaco's but it is at the top of my list!) Deep fried veg sushi of pretty much any kind at Cha Ya--Oh. Em. Gee.

Vik's Chaat House--so good. Herbivore I've only been to the one in SF, and it was good not great.

Also agreed on the Cafe Gratitude prices--seem kind of exorbitant. Raw desserts are worth the trip and the price. The service I actually don't mind. It is INSANELY slow, but to me they just seemed kind of cheerful and high. Plus I love how they ask you with a complete lack of irony, "So, what are you grateful for today?" And they are expecting an answer. I usually just say the food. Also, if you ever happen to find yourself at CG, avoid the wine, sadly it is not drinkable even if you are as high as the waitstaff.

Have fun and tell us where you go!

Oh wow thanks you guys! This is so helpful.

I'm not entirely sure where in Berkeley I'll be. I've never been before and I'm super pumped. :)

I love Flaco's, and it's in a tiny little gnome house.

Booo, it sounds like Flaco's isn't open for dinner on Sundays. Oh well, I'll have to hit them up next time. I'm leaning toward Cha Ya or if we're anywhere near Vik's, maybe there.

okay so I managed to reschedule some stuff and now we are going on Saturday - so I can once again go to Flaco's! What's the best thing to order there? I checked out their website and the chalupas sound pretty amazing.

Taquitos! I've never had a chalupa there, but now I'm curious.

OMG EVERYTHING at Flacos is amazing. Get the spicy salsa with your taquitos. Get tacos, get tamales, get it all!

I think Flacos also has a stall at the Berkeley farmer's market. I like the horchata!

Flaco's taquitos = OMG amazing. I also tried a tamale, it was okay, but not as good as the taquito.

Also had a chance to try out Cinnaholic. I had the chocolate chip cookie dough...I'm pretty sure I died and went to some kind of cinnamon bun heaven.

The taquitos are definitely where it's at.

Fellinis brunch is a must have...get the vegan french toast with cheddar bacon tofu scramble, some house potatos, and fresh OJ

Its one of my favorite treats but a little pricy so we do it maybe once a month, if that often

I just had Flaco's for the first time yesterday and I had the full meal with taquitos and hot sauce. Legit! I definitely give them credit for having sauce that's actually hot.

Aaaand, tried the veggy burger at Herbivore yesterday. Very legit, though I wasn't a huge fan of the fries. They have a massive menu; I want to try some of their Italian entrees.

Addis Restaurant on Telegraph has an expanded vegetarian/vegan menu AND vegan baklava. It's Ethiopian food and quite close to Scream sorbet.
