15 minute preview on HBO right now!!! I hope this is good. I don't read the books but my bf does so I have to watch the miniseries in solidarity with him. It looks good judging by this preview!
It seems I spoke too soon. I cannot handle that many full frontal beheadings in a 10 minutes span.

oh really, that sucks. i can't handle that kind of shiitake either and my bf is on the last book and super excited about the series. this may have to be a show i don't partake in. the story sounds so miserable from the descriptions i've heard it might be to much for me to want to watch anyways.

The books are fantastic! It's super political. A lot of vying for power, plotting and betrayal. Not a lot of action at all. So they probably used a violent scene to reel in viewers.
Unfortunately, I don't have HBO so I'm going to have to wait for Netflix. But that's fine. Even more exciting than Game of Thrones (HBO) is Dance with Dragons (book 5) Comes out in July, I think.

From what I remember seemed like it is following the book pretty well. I didnt think the first episode was bad at all. And so far the casting seems pretty great.

I'm kind of divided on the series (I haven't read the books). By the end I was getting mildly interested and will probably watch the next episode.

I'm excited that they cast Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister. He's such a good actor and I'd totally cast him in that role as I was reading the books.
I have somewhat mixed feelings about the books. I really like that the characters are complex and grow and that Martin isn't afraid to do terrible things to his characters, as difficult as that might be as a reader. I do wish he would get over his obsession with describing brutal rape scenes multiple times in each book. Yes, I know there are terrible people and they do terrible things, but why must it be rape every damn time? That's going to make watching the series difficult.

I haven't read the books so I don't have any point of reference. But I liked the first episode and look forward to the next.
BluePlasticStraw - I'm so with you. I complain a lot when I watch tv and it's always because I will never understand why there has to be a (or multiple) rape scene or violent sex in almost every freaking show? Why?! Why can't sex scenes show women enjoying sex ever, outside of the scenes with prostitutes. Is that too boring?? And, lastly, when there are non-rape scenes, can we expand our imaginations a little? The only position is not from behind. Okay, end rant.

I can't recall any rape scene from the books, but certainly a lot of graphic sexual content. But the wedding night of the young dragon and a Dothraki made me uneasy. And yes, so stoked for book 5!!! I want to do ASoIaF re-read, but I'm in the middle of Wheel of Time right now and I think two high fantasy series at a time is one too many.

HBO just signed on for the second season, according to Martin: http://grrm.livejournal.com/211736.html

I watched it last night. Viserys is CREEPY.
I don't know where there have to be so many boobs, though? There were no naked men wandering around but so, so many boobs.

There were boobs in Band of Brothers, too! Which is saying something considering there were about 2 women in the entire cast.

Man - I thought this was awesome, though perhaps hard to follow all the characters - I felt like I needed a family tree in front of me. Excited to see it unfold.

There's a genealogy of the different families on Wikipedia, but it's going to come with spoilers.

I haven't read the book but my partner has been filling me in on everything I don't understand. I thought it was good overall and has potential to really develop into something fantastic. However, one thing that really stuck out to me is how the 'primitive' tribespeople were portrayed at the wedding ceremony. They were all savage, animalistic, carnal, sexual, and... colored. It seemed pretty lazy and offensive to me.
