Since someone posted a recipe in the kitchen, now I really want a sandwich. Googling leads me to some place on Larkin and Eddy with no website or anything, and I could totally just walk down there and investigate but I'd have to like, put clothes on and get cash and stuff, and I'd rather know that my efforts will be worthwhile. So, has anyone been there?

I've gotten Banh mis from two places in that neighborhood -- one was from a little shop on the east side of larkin -- I kinda think they marinated their tofu in chicken-broth and I never went back. The other place is Lees, which is I think a regional franchise but they have a Banh mi with I think fried shredded tofu (or maybe its vermicelli noodles?). I've been there a dozen times and really like they Banh mi + advocado. Plus they have a bunch of little Vietnamese deserts that seem to be vegan -- sweet coconut rice-type things.

Not sure if the fried bits are done in untainted oil, but my bestie likes Dinosaur's tofu banh mi spinoff. In the Castro across the street from the Eureka/Harvey Milk branch of SF public library. Low profile shop, so check it on Google street view or something before you go. Hell, call before you go and ask about the true vegan-ness before you go! They have pinball, tho!

saigon apparently uses meat juice to marinate the tofu. but, i think you can ask them to cook it w/o the fish sauce or whatever they use. dinosaurs for life (and they use veganaise)!

Lees on Larkin has new marinated tofu sandwich that's pretty good. Like a traditional tofu banh mi.

Yes, Saigon Sandwich is NOT VEGAN. so sad. :(
I am excited to try Lee's new sandwich though. Normally their vegan option is pretty blah.

Mike and I went to Dinosaurs last night. Verdict: AMAZING. The sandwiches are a bit more expensive than normal (but still under $5), but they're SO good. The bread is perfect and crispy and delicious, and the sandwiches have house-made pickled veggies, jalapenos with actual flavor and head (I like the little place near where I work, but the jalapenos they have there don't taste like anything), shredded fried tofu with rice noodles and taro, cilantro, and cucumber. Oh, and vegennaise! We also split some cold spring rolls with tofu and a really awesome hoisin-y sauce.
The guy at the counter was also really nice, and it was great that they obviously knew what vegan was. Highly recommended. Erika, you and I need to go there soon.

Dinosaur is great, haven't seen vegenaise anywhere else.
I've been going to Lee's a bunch lately, 2.99 and they use a pretty tasty deep fried marinated tofu -- kinda like what you'd find in an Asian fried- tofu entree. And they're open at like 6:00 am.

Ba Le and Cam Huong are the spots in Oakland. Ba Le's veggie ham jammies are $2.75.

I finally got to try Dinosaur's this week and it was good! A little dry for my tastes but definitely not unwelcome.
