Also; As a mother, I have a hard time reading about other mothers who intentionally harm their children. I just cannot understand how a person can harm a being so innocent.

I think around 9/11 they decided not to publish a few articles that would have been too controversial. One was America Stronger Than Ever, Says Quadragon Official, or something like that.

This story and other similar ones are the result of "abstinence only" education and right to life activists. Make birth control readily available and you will prevent unwanted pregnancy.

um no, this has nothing to do with abstinence only education. you have no idea why she had a baby, and subsequently killed him. my guess is ongoing mental issues and possibly PPD (postpartum depression) which is no laughing matter. a severe case of PPD can induce you to seriously harm or kill your baby. not getting on the pill or getting an abortion has nothing to do with it.

not saying that abstinence ed and anti-abortion activists aren't misguided and unethical, just that they have nothing to do with this particular issue. i honestly don't think even farmville had much to do with it (as in, it could have easily happened while playing another game, trying to watch a tv show or because she wanted to sleep).

i feel so terrible for this poor girl and her poor little baby. it is a massive adjustment to become a parent, and being successful with serious mental issues and recent loss of her support system (her mother had recently died) is doubly difficult. this is something she'll have to live with for the rest of her life. i really feel sad for her.

I agree, littlebird, postpartum mental health issues are not to be taken lightly. But, I'm actually guessing that if there is an ongoing mental health issues that it's more likely postpartum psychosis. Similar, but not the same as PPD. PPD is more associated (at times) with self-harm, and not really associated with harm to a child. Postpartum psychosis is associated (at times) with harm to the child (as in the situation of Andrea Yeats). Not trying to get picky, I just know that mood changes postpartum are TERRIBLY common, and PPD is more comman than most realise. So I didn't want anyone reading this to associate PPD and infanticide together in their heads and scare themselves unnecessarily.

(that said, if you think you have PPD OR are having thoughts of harming yourself OR having thoughts of harming your baby, please call your local Psychiatry Emergency services number!!)
