I still haven't built my 'BUSH TURKEY NO!' defense for the garden yet but I've been lucky for the past week, no digging up of the garden. The rocket (arugula) grows like crazy and my cucumber plant is coming along but everything else is keeping pretty quiet under the soil or just popping their heads up for a look.

Sounds to me like you'd have to be quite the imbecile to think someone is growing drugs when there is clearly no drugs being grown, so I'd say your chances are pretty low of that.

I finally planted some herbs, and kale in a big stone planter, but rain has prevented the garden tilling. I bought some tomato plants two weeks ago thinking, "Oh, i'll get to till and put these in the ground next week." Newp! It didn't rain last night like it was supposed to and if it doesn't rain today or tonight or tomorrow morning, we miiiiight be able to till. Otherwise i'm SOL for a whole 'nother week.

My tomatoes are too big for their own good, most are a foot tall now. Can May be here sooner? I need to get these pups in the ground. Our arugula and other salad greens are lookin' good. Thirty-seven strawberry plants went in the ground yesterday. One of our apple trees is a'blooming. What I think are teeny little green plums have covered one of our plum trees. And I'm going to be putting in some blueberry shrubs this week. Oh yeah! I'm excited!

Can someone give me a quick run-down of how to start seeds? We don't have frost ever so I was going to do it outdoors, our temps at the moment are about 60F at night and 75F (sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less) during the day. I want to do some tomatoes (I have a book that says I can start them now in my climate), rosemary and chilli seeds.

If you're doing it outdoors, it's super easy. The seed packet will tell you how deep to plant them (usually between 1/8 inch to an inch) and how far apart to plant them. Don't press down the soil on top of the seeds when you cover them. They need to be able to push through the loose soil as they grow. Then you just make sure to keep the soil damp until the plants sprout.

if the seed is large with a hard shell (like chard, peas, beans, nasturtiums) soak 'em over night prior to planting.

I'm so excited! They are so cute! I love the shape of nasturtium leaves, and they are extra cute being all mini-sprout size and all.

you guys are amazing. i can get from seeds to tiny seedlings but they don't usually go past that stage. i'll take pics of my disaster later, including my personal attempt at carefree gardening.

don't let this set you back! please show pics, because we can help you. three+ years ago, i started working in this industry with just a handful of knowledge and i still have set backs. growing plants has nothing to do with a green thumb. it's science.

I love nasturtiums! I was sad I had to dig some out that I had seeded on a whim a few months ago on a bare patch that is now planted with squash and strawberries. I found some seed packs though that had gorgeous burgundy and cream flowers, so I've restarted some on the other side of the yard along with the classic orange and yellow varieties. They're going to be tumbling over a mossy rock wall, so I can't wait until they bloom.

My variety is called 'alaska variegated' and the leaves are all stripey with white! Apparently the leaves of this variety are supposed to taste better than the standard one too. I'm not sure if the flowers come variegated too... that'd be neat.

My front window is full of extra coffee mugs filled with little plants. So far I started: tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, and peppers.

IsaChandra wrote: This is making me miss Portland a TINY bit. I'll post my Nebraska garden soon! Nothing is really happening just yet. You're not missing much. Portland's spring really sucks again this year - my soil is way too wet to mess with much, and the slugs are the size of elephants and as numerous as an army. If I didn't have lots of overwintered greens and leeks, I'd be starving right now. And even if it were dryer, it's been way too cold for beans, corn, or tomatoes to go in.

Is your Euphorbia quite a bit bigger now? I keep seeing these GIANT euphorbia's all over town... Love them. I'm using them in flower arrangements too right now, so fun.

I wonder if anyone knows what this plant is. I was out weeding in the garden today and noticed a lot of this. I don't think it's something I planted, but I can't be sure! It's really viney.
