Post Punk Kitchen Forum

I have a giant running document of unfinished song/poetry ideas... some are nearly complete, others are just a line or two or a concept. Same with short stories and even novels... I'll write a concept or outline, then make a huge start to it, but then I get distracted and bored. I enjoy it, but I doubt I'll ever finish anything so it feels rather pointless.

I get inspired by lots of things though. If I see something particularly striking or beautiful, if I enjoy something, or if something I see makes me angry... it always makes me feel like describing it creatively in words. I guess my problem is, as soon as that emotion is gone, I am bored with the piece, and if it's not finished, I never go back to it. I should catalogue everything by feeling so I can go back to them as needed! As for style, I try to be creative and flexible. Whatever I'm reading finds its way into my writing somehow, and I try out different techniques based on how I can convey a specific emotion.

I would definitely post something on here. I'm new, but I like you guys. I will just have to go through everything and find something that can pass for complete.

We've begun our first writing challenge! The community is open for membership if others would like to join. I used to write a lot and then I went into therapy for depression/anxiety/e.d. and after that I stopped writing. I don't know why because I love writing and I want to write but the sight of an empty page fills me with dread and anxiety. Anything that I do write I think is total bullshiitake so it usually get ripped up or deleted.

i'm chewing on the second assignment and will likely post something this weekend. i wish i had a clone of myself to do all the shiitake i want to do.

I just sent in a join request... I am seriously out of practice writing much more than my ridiculously verbose forum posts and the occasional LJ entry. Way back in the day I wrote, uh... Well, I wrote an article on writing LARPs that was published in a regional LARPing magazine (it was pretty idiosyncratic, but made its point) and I've done some video game writing. I took a few writing classes almost twenty years ago, and the best of those impressed on me the value of workshopping. I have a directory full of semi-finished stories and a couple of things I wrote in a sort of modern fantasy world that are somewhere near Tim Powers and probably someone else I'm not thinking of. They're worth revisiting sometime. You know, copious free time and all that.

Oh, and I wrote a play in 1991 or 1992 that was produced as part of a college drama festival and was generally well-received. It was a very typical undergraduate personal-symbolism play where if you knew what it was actually about you'd think it was utterly utterly banal, but which I managed to disguise behind faux-Fellini trappings and some pretty snappy dialog, if I do say so myself. (And I just did.)

New writing invitation posted on the LJ comm!

i am a writer. i write poetry and my major project is a book/story i've been writing for 5+ years, now. there was a first book and a second one, a sequel/continuation. but now i'm editing everything and merging the two. i forking live for this thing - fiction is such a cathartic escape. i don't reckon i'll be able to ever escape that world and write new stories. and i am totally fine with this. i won't post it online, though.

Wonderful! Especially since the story I had been working on for the previous one pretty much never happened.

I really want to do this again!
