I was thinking of doing it! It's going to be at 9 am here in Los Angeles.

It's going to be a 5 minute bike ride for me.

Last time there was a rally in MacArthur Park, people got shot with rubber bullets in the back by police though...so I'm a bit wary.

I have mixed feeling about this rally. Because it's political but has no clear message. Am I the only one? My facebook newsfeed is full of positive status updates about it.

Isn't that the point? A message about no real message to mock other messages.

That seems like a pretty pointless milquetoast "message." While send a message that says "we have nothing to say."

Well, they're comedians.

Yeah. But comedy can still say something. And if they can't, maybe they shouldn't have bothered.

I think they're doing ok.

I thought the rally did have a message. Just the title says something to me. To me it's restoring sanity because politics lately has become "insane", esp with all the teabaggers. And the rally to "keep fear alive" is a comment on how our country (politicians and corporations) uses fear to get what it wants.

I think people should be afraid. Some good examples of reaching across the aisle bipartisanship: DADT, DOMA, welfare reform, NAFTA, Wall St. deregulation, Afghanistan, Iraq, The USAPATRIOT act. Coming soon: massive social security cuts and a considerable jump in the retirement age.

As much as I like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report, "yay, moderation!" isn't a great rallying cry. It sounds too much like the Nixonian silent majority to me. With this economy, I don't want to hear about moderation, I want to hear about herculean efforts. And as Imitation of Chris points out, so-called "bipartisanship" usually means surrendering liberal values.

This just seem to incredibly pointless and disappointing to me.

I don't know, in this country lately it seems like everything we hear is all about extremism, both on the left and right. I think it's nice to see somebody - even if they're just comedians - pointing out that most of us are somewhere in the middle and do not truly spend our lives consumed with hatred for "the other side." I mean, not like I don't think those tea partiers are an abomination, but the majority of my brain power is spent on living my life, hanging out with my husband and cats, shooting the shiitake with my friends, etc.

I cancelled cable a few months ago and I have never been so glad to not have access to CNN and MSNBC and Fox News during an election cycle. Everyone on television just seems to be consumed with hatred and alarmist craziness and it's really, really disturbing. I'm glad not to be a part of it and I'm also glad that Jon Stewart takes the time on his show and in this rally to point out how insane it's all gotten.

I like it. This is all I have seen or heard about this rally, though, so I can't speak about it as a whole. But I think it's a very rational, positive, and thoughtful message.

Perhaps I need to reconsider some anti depressants.

Also, I don't consider Colbert/Stewart to be 'just' comedians. I was hoping they were the coming of a grand Bakhtinian carnival but I don't think the country is there just yet.

I went to the rally, but got there late and missed most of it. From what I heard on the radio on the way there it sounded a lot like a comedy performance, but if you watch Jon Stewart's speech at the end it kind of shows the message. I thought it was cool to see so many people there who probably don't agree on every issue, but are willing to come together anyway. I'm also all for moderation, so maybe that's why I thought it was cool.

That's my problem. I am not for moderation. At all. I think it's sad that so many progressives have been worn down so much that they are willing to accept moderation.

Yeah, I'm progressive too, but I can understand the desire to take back the middle of the road moniker (I think of Obama as middle of the road, too, but the hysteria we see around him doesn't reflect that).

I went and had a good time. Holy hell there were a lot of people though. Lots of good signs, wish I would have taken more pictures.

There was no specific point to the rally, we all went for different reasons. I went for the signs, and boy was I pleased. More people went for fun than to show how "moderate" they were, and I saw very few signs referencing how moderate ones were.

hmm, "political but has no real message" what does that remind you of?

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I don't think moderation is it. I saw the rallies as a cry to restore reason and logic and, well, sanity to political discourse, as it's been so thoroughly overshadowed by overt craziness in the last 18 months or so. You can be radical and still be reasonable and logical and sane, I do believe.
