I know about the organic, vegan, essential oil stuffs like BPAL and Pacifica and stuff like that, but what big name perfumes are vegan? Back in the day I was wearing Stella McCartney which was veg and awesome, and I intend on getting more but it's a special scent to save for special days. What do you guys know and love when it comes to fine fragrances?

This is the only thing that can pry me away from my Chanel No5. I love the soap and body cream too. They are so refreshing for the summer.

Fun fact: Chanel No 5 was the first commercial entirely synthetic perfume. And zoos have used it to entice mountain lions to mate.

I hope this isn't too off-topic but what is it that usually makes perfumes non-vegan? Animal testing? An ingredient? I haven't worn it in a few years because I haven't felt the need but I used to wear Stella too.

Probably mostly just testing these days. There are synthetics for almost everything, and they are cheaper than the old musks and other animal ingredients.

A lot of the designer perfumes are distributed by companies that test like Coty. Chanel and Dior are self-distributed and don't test, but Calvin Klein is distributed by a testing conglomerate I think.

Glycerine, as well, is a common additive to everything. It's in food, too, as E422, as a humectant. That may or may not be animal-derived.

I have the origins ginger, it's the only one that doesn't give me a migraine. I used the soap & body soufflé t'other week and mid conversation one of my friends suddenly said "you smell really good, what is that?!". She has a fine nose for scents, can tell you everything that is in soap or perfumes with a couple of sniffs, so it was a pretty nice compliment.

Chanel No 5 and Dior Pure Poison are my 2 favourites. I like J'adore as well and would buy some if it wasn't so expensive.

I also love Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique, which I think is vegan but I'm not 100% sure about that. I still have a bottle I bought pregan.

I like Lavanila. I try to stay away from Phthalates found in scents.

I hope (Thierry Mugler's) Angel is vegan. I have a bottle that has been around forever and I want to buy more when I run out. I've been wearing it since the 90's. Anyone know? I think we had a thread for perfume somewhere else and other people also wore Angel?

I think I saw that Chanel Chance is vegan? That's what I've been wearing for, um, 10 years? Or so? Yikes!

I use Stella in Two. I suppose its vegan?

Aghh. I made a quick google search ("stella in two vegan") and the link for that stella's and meatmeat's interview showed up. Pfff.

As far as I know all the Chanel fragrances are synthetic. I don't know about the exclusifs that are recreations of vintage scents, but those are boutique only.

They're on the Peta no test list as well, but I don't know about ingredients.

Apparently they're owned by clarins! But no I don't know about ingredients either.

I like Kai perfume oil.

I keep meaning to try Origins ginger one. I'm trying to be frugal and not buy new perfumes until my old ones are used up.

I have a few Yves Rocher scents that are cheapish but I like and wear more for everyday (Naturelle and Ming Shu) and save the Kai for more special occasions since it's pricey.

Anybody know if Jean-Paul Gaultier tests on animals?

According to Wikipedia "All Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes are produced under a long-term license by Paris-based Beauté Prestige International, a division of the Japanese company Shiseido that also produces fragrances for Narciso Rodriguez, Elie Saab and Issey Miyake."

I don't know about Gaultier, but I do know the parent company Shiseido test.

I can't find any proof on the internetz that Chanel No 5 is vegan. Do you have a link?

Someone on another vegan board got an email regarding Chanel No 5 being vegan OK.

There are synthetic sources for most of the animal ingredients in perfume now. I don't think that too many companies use genuine musk. Ambergris is about the most disgusting thing ever...
