we use glucose gel, they come in 15 carb tubes, my son is super awesome at spitting out those icing thingies when he's nearly unconscious. Use any simple sugar, something with fat like chocolate won't help right away. Sometimes if a person w/diabetes is alone and this happens, their body will kick out some glucose stores (don't make me get technical cause I can't remember the scientific terms) and they'll be safe-you can't rely on this but it happens. But if they are constantly going low, these stores get depleted and they are s.o.l. When my son has a lot of lows, we of course lower his insulin amounts and run him higher for a few days to give his body a relief.
I would also try and locate the glucagon kit and read up on the instructions, hopefully he has one. Sounds like he has a drinking problem and he's burned out. I know if my son was out there somewhere in the world doing this I would want to know! I fear he'll get burned out because he's had it practically his whole life.

this may be the answer to the question i came in with.

the mr is type 2. he called me a bit ago to come home. i had let him sleep in and he woke up absolutely soaked. he checked his sugar and it was 115. he had been awake at about 5 and took his shots, then went back to sleep. i told him that under no circumstance was he to do that again.

Just got the results of my latest A1C test: 6.6!

Maybe my workouts are actually accomplishing something!

I love my new meter. Not only does it download all my numbers onto pretty logs and graphs (I suck at logging), but it says helpful things like, "Hey, stupid, you put the strip in upside down!"*

*I might be paraphrasing

I can indicate that I exercised. I don't bother.

How much are your strips?

My endo gave me the meter for free. I do pay for some things. All my other scripts I pay for, just not testing supplies.

has anyone seen the commercial for butterfly strips? They look pretty cool, like they suck up the blood.
We are stuck with mail order, so we get a 3 month supply at a time, and a fat copay to go along with all those strips!

My regular old OneTouch strips (the kind you use with the UltraSmart and probably others) do that. I guess. You need the teeniest, tiniest drop, and it's drawn right up.

My current meter does that, and my old one, an acucheck, had those, too.

well ours sucks then, I keep getting error messages at 2 am when I'm trying to get blood. stupid bayer contour. I also liked that it was the first commercial in awhile that doesn't have an elderly person say "and I don't have to use my fingers". Well you still have to jab some part of your body!

I haven't been on the ADA website in awhile. They've given an OK to vegetarian and vegan diets. Finally. The word vegetarian wasn't even on their website when I went vegan, and now they have a guide about how to eat veg with diabetes. And it actually has good, useful, accurate information.

Does this my feud with them can finally end?

It was probably about 15 years ago when I canceled my subscription to Diabetes Forecast and write them many angry letters.

his page is full of people claiming a raw vegan diet will cure type 1 diabetes. it seems like a certain company, which I don't want to state here, appear any time diabetes is typed on the internet, shiitake I hope they won't come here! I did ADA stuff last year and all of the catered food was donated, the ADA had nothing to do with meat being served. I wasn't in charge of the food, but getting gift basket donations, chairs, and the set up and did a local radio show. But I did do a happy dance that a grocer donated several tables worth of fruit!

I didn't know it was about curing Type 1. That seems a little... unorthodox.
