What does way expired mean? I'm risking it. I'm making BBQ Seitan and Broccoli. Unless I hear otherwise in the next 15 or so minutes, of course. :)

The shortbread I just ate expired in February. It just tasted stale, not WRONG.

cilantro tends to rot super extra quick, and if it didn't go bad, it certainly got slimey and would give you some nasty mouthfeel.

so last monday i soaked/cooked some kidney beans that i never got around to using. i was thinking of creating beanballs with them, which i intend on frying.
i've heard my coworker say that refried beans were a favorite way of increasing his bean's longevity. is this a similar principle? may i imagine these beanballs-to-be will be safe for consumption for one week longer? would you do it? i hope so, i'm thinking they ultimately belong in a curry.

I've had some soyrizo in the freezer for a really long time. Like, well over a year, maybe two or possibly even more. Can I use it for cinco de mayo burgers or should i throw it out and get fresh?

Probably safe, but might taste bad. Is this a self-defrosting freezer or not? If it's self-defrosting, it is probably freezer burn city. If not, there might be some hope.

I am a complete wimp when it comes to passing expiration dates, so this probably will sound stupid. But...about ten days ago I went on a green pepper shopping spree. I have two left, in the fridge, and physically they look fine, but the top part with the stem seems to have been visited by the fuzzies. Just cut the top off and use them? Like I said...I'm a wimp.

Yes, just cut off the bit that's started to go and the rest will be absolutely fine. Honestly.

My boss just picked up food for the office from Wendy's (I know, I know) and got me a bag of their little apple slices. I was starving, so I dug right in and ate maybe half a dozen before realizing that they tasted 'off' and also that the slices were all mushy and gross-looking.
Checked the expiration date.
MAY 18. EIGHT DAYS AGO.

AHHHHHHHH! Am I going to get sick?! I have always been super-neurotic about expiration dates/rottenness when it comes to produce. I called the store and was like, "This product I just bought from your store has been expired for over a week," and the woman who answered just said, "Yeah, OK, 'bye," and hung up! We work/eat at Wendy's in the inner city, which means that their fruit products probably don't get so much as a glance most days, but I feel like I should've gotten at least an "We'll take those off the shelf right now so no one else buys them!" or SOMETHING. But no. Yeah, OK, 'bye.

If I get food poisoning for Memorial Day weekend because of forking apple slices from Wendy's, especially considering I already ate an apple today, I'm going to be so bummed.

Sooo... has anyone on the PPK ever eaten a rotten apple?

i've eaten bites of rotten stuff off an apple several times (eating while driving, not recommended). you might get the runs, but i think nothing worse.
i would call some higher-up customer service line and complain, not only about the food, but about the person who attended you. you should at least be getting a refund or coupons or AN APOLOGY, for pete's sake. it's not like you willingly, knowingly bought something expired (like in a grocery store, they could at least say "you should have checked the date before you purchased it"....) you didn't get to choose it, it was sold to you as expired. not cool.

Thanks for the advice! Just e-mailed Wendy's general customer service address for that particular store and said that I wanted to make sure that they would be taking the expired product off of their shelves, no need for a refund or anything... hopefully that does the trick.
My stomach is A-OK as yet, so here's hoping nothing goes horribly awry. I ate half a package of Biscoff to ward off illness, just in case!

I soaked some cashews and didn't end up using them, and then left them out all day, and now they've been in the fridge for a couple days. Can I still use them? I've never not used them right after soaking. Also, I drained the water out.

I did the same thing a week or so ago. I ended up pitching them and starting over. It just seemed like a good environment for bacteria to grow.

I think soaked nuts are supposed to be good for about a week? The question is if it was warm in your house when you left them out all day - if so, you could potentially get some fermentation or nastiness growing. If not, I would probably use them (but would feel better if it were in something cooked/baked rather than raw).

Arrrggh. I'm so mad at myself. I made red curry rice last night for dinner and then left it out overnight. I forgot to put it away. Am I safe to eat it now? I generally never leave anything out as I put food away right after dinner. But it was so good and I kept going back for a quick bite through the evening. It has coconut milk - I'm guessing if I reheat to nuclear temps it will be OK?

I wouldn't do it. Read about Bacillus cereus food poisoning if you're not convinced.

Zucchinis that are soft and bendy. I swear they are only a few days old ... I feel like I've had zucchinis around for way longer and they didn't get all bendy. Can I eat them? I'm really hungry.
