Good day,

I have just acquired an ice cream maker, and naturally, I am looking to acquire some recipes, too.
There are two cookbooks I am looking at: Vice Cream -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vice-Cream-Gourmet-Vegan-Desserts/dp/1587611996/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307716849&sr=8-1

...and The Vegan Scoop -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vegan-Scoop-Rec ... 849&sr=8-2

I'm leaning towards The Vegan Scoop.

Do you own either of these books? If so, can you relate your impression of it, please?

I have both... but I haven't used either one yet. I need to locate my ice cream maker and dive into one of them. The Vegan Scoop appeals more to me, recipe-wise, but I can't vouch for it.

I really like the recipes from The Vegan Scoop but don't forget that Veganomicon has a great coconut based one too.

I looked at The Vegan Scoop, but it relied so much on cashews. My favorite is Lick It! (and not just because the title makes me sophomorically giggle, but it's a bonus). The tangerine sherbet is fabulous, but the kiwi sorbet is still my favorite.

ETA: Amazon link for your perusal.

I really like lick it too but i also like the ice cream recipe in Veganomicon so sometimes i"ll use the V'con recipe as a base and then use lick it for inspiration for certain flavors.

Really? I was hoping/expecting it would be soy/rice/coconut milk-based recipes...

Thanks for the link: I just nicked the vanilla and choc-chip cookie dough ice cream recipes.
The author seems to know what she's doing; if these recipes turn out well, I might buy her book.
Thanks a lot. :)

Does the tangerine sherbet have a coconut milk base (that seems to be her preferred milk)?

I have Vice Cream but I haven't used it yet. It doesn't have any pictures, so if that's important to you then don't get it.

I have Vice Cream and have made 1 recipe out of it. It was so bad I threw it all away. I use my ice cream maker to make slushies. You can put any juice in it and about 15 min later you have a slushie! My niece was hooked on the ones at 7-11 and when she had one of mine (with organic cranberry juice) she said they taste much better! Yay!

I do plan to try the Vcon one. It sounds really good!

The V'con recipe is so delicious I haven't needed to try another one. My go-to is the chocolate version with peanut butter swirled in at the end (SO GOOD), but I've dumped other things into the vanilla version on a whim (coffee crystals, cookie dough, brownies) and it always turns out great.

I tried the vanilla and chocolate recipes from The Vegan Scoop -- they weren't bad by any means, but the vanilla was not creamy enough and froze really hard in the freezer, after churning. The chocolate was better, probably due to the fat from the chocolate chips. Neither of those recipe used cashews at all, and I didn't notice any other recipe using cashews..? They all use the same basic recipe -- soymilk, soy creamer, and sugar cooked on the stove, then arrowroot stirred in.

My favorite is the vanilla from Veganomicon. It is scoopable even when frozen. I just made coffee flavor last night by adding 6 1/2 teaspoons instant decaf coffee crystals.

I think I made the strawberry ice cream out of this one, and wasn't very impressed. This book is almost all cashew based recipes and mostly it's just blended cashews.. so they turn out very thick and not airy at all... mine got hard as a rock. I don't think a cashew base is inherently bad, though; I have had luck making other people's recipes using the raw cashew milk/cream that I make with my soymilk maker, I think the amount of water is higher and it's strained, and that makes the difference.

It's a lot of work but I think the Thaiphoon in Robin Robertson's "Vegan Planet" is really good if you want something coconut milk based. I've also made some from http://veganicecream.blogspot.com/ ; the cookies and cream and blueberry cheesecake are great, I think I enjoyed one of the peanut butter ones but don't recall which; the pumpkin was less successful.

Slushies? Interesting...good idea; thanks.
What juices do you put in: fresh fruit ones?

The Veganomicon ice cream recipe/s: i'm not really into the idea of silken tofu in desserts...

I have made the vanilla ice cream from Lick It! and it is amazing.

I have Vice Cream. I've only used it a couple of times, but I like it. I'm eating the vanilla bean one (with raw brownie bits mixed in) at the moment, actually! I discovered via Lula's that cashew-based ice cream is my favorite, so I was looking for that when I bought it. Mine turned out great - scoopable straight from the freezer, lovely vanilla flavor, and I like the texture. I have a Vitamix, and made the base in that, so maybe that helped.

It doesn't taste like tofu. Really! It does taste like coconut and vanilla. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to coconut haters.

I have the vegan scoop, it was a gift but I still don't have an ice cream machine so I can't tell you if the recipes are good or not but I'll just warn you that the recipes use A LOT of maple syrup & that stuff's crazy expensive here.

I tried that V'con vanilla and it was a total failure. BUT I tried to double it and I think it was just too much for my ice cream maker to handle.

I'm in England, too; I tend to just use golden syrup instead of maple syrup...

I know, that's why I mentioned it! I just remembered that Hannah from Bittersweet Vegan has an ice cream e-book that I've heard great things about. http://bittersweetblog.wordpress.com/e-books/

YES! it's awesome and the ingredients aren't too random to find over here! I see on Hannah's blog that she is bringing out a whole real life book, cannot wait. A La Mode is well worth the $5 in the meantime, the cherry cola ice cream is on my to make list.

I buy a small bottle of organic cranberry, apple or grape juice when I know she's coming over. Supposedly you can put soda in it too, but I haven't tried that. It's pretty impressive how it comes out in such a short time. I think one day I'll try making frozes cosmos in it. :)

Thanks a lot.

At the cinema here, they have Fanta slushies - so they're fizzy. I put some (store brand) Sprite in my ice cream maker last night, et voila: about five minutes later I had a slushie.
I'll try it with some juices when I get the money.

It's good to know that it will work with soda! Maybe I'll try it with some ginger ale. :) Thanks!

I looked at vegan scoop, but that uses a base of soy creamer and heated soymilk and arrowroot for the base. Vice Cream uses cashews as the base, vanilla bean and maple syrup ( I can't imagine how much a batch costs!), but the one I ended up buying was Lick It, which uses a coconut and soymilk base. I've made several of the flavors from Green Tea, Chai, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Ginger, White Chocolate Chip, and Pumpkin. I documented the pumpkin one here (along with a homemade organic and fair trade hot fudge from the book):
http://redundantvegan.blogspot.com/2010/12/ill-be-on-corner-eating-nothing-la-mode.html
Green Tea (Scroll Down):
http://redundantvegan.blogspot.com/2011/03/four-course-valentines-dinner.html

I'm in the process of making my own recipe for cake batter ice cream (inspired by lula's) and my childhood favorite, bubblegum ice cream. Oh, and banana split ice cream! If I can find a cone model or a pizzel maker, I have recipes to make my own cones, too! I'll post the results on my site: http://redudantvegan.blogspot.com
