I am very happy to announce that the small town (city?) of Chico now has vegan donuts! Damn good vegan donuts, to boot! A local gourmet donut shop started serving up vegan donuts this week, and they plan to keep doing so as long as they sell (probably scaling back to once or twice a week). Today's offering was: vanilla raised with chocolate glaze, and vanilla raised with maple glaze. The maple one was really good (but then, I'm a fan of the maple). I have to say that they are at least as good, if not better than, Pepple's donuts. Here's the info: Donut Rising 1008 West Sacramento Ave. (next to Safeway on Nord) Chico, CA 95926 530-894-7847 http://donutrising.com/Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/DonutRisingAnd if you're ever passing through, PM me and maybe we can meet up? There's at least one other Chico vegan on PPK ( Walrus!!). Slowly but surely the vegan population of Chico is growing. I'll probably keep this thread as a clearinghouse for Chico-stuff, just for you Bay Area folk who are on your way to or from Farm Sanctuary-west events.

Alas, I will be in Sacramento on Saturday! I am going to the Never Felt Better book event for the Gladcow Cookbook by Summer Keightley. There is a vegan-friendly Yelp restaurant review list for Chico that you might find helpful: http://www.yelp.com/list/chico-vegan-fr ... aces-chico

In addition to doughnuts...Chico is finally growing a vegan cafe! It's not open yet, but soon. I just had to share the excitement. I will post an update when the place is open. Monkeyface Cafe http://www.monkeyfacecafe.com/wordpress/

I call my kitty Tori "monkeyface", too! It's a term of endearment.
The "monkeyface" in the cafe's name comes from a local rock formation that looks like a monkey from the right angle. On the cafe's FB profile, they held a contest to guess where the name came from. The lucky winner (a friend of mine) won a discount for LIFE for guessing correctly!

I am happy, so very happy, to announce that our local Safeway supermarkets are carrying a few kinds of Dave's Killer Bread! It's a little pricy at $5.99/loaf (but there's a loyalty discount right now to $3.99/loaf), so I'm not sure how long the experiment will last. It's so nice to get to try something that I've heard about for so long! It's very tasty bread; a little on the sweet side, but oh-so-healthy and oh-so-vegan. Our local weekly did a story on the company here. LINK: http://www.newsreview.com/chico/daves-k ... id=4551744

I thought this upcoming talk in Chico would be of interest to PPKers. I love that it is being given at our local Sustainability Conference that usually celebrates our local 'family' animal farmers. Also, the speaker is a good guy. He's a philosophy prof at CSUC. If anyone decides to come up for this, PM me and we can get together. We have vegan donuts in Chico these days. And some other decent eats. Chico Sustainability Conference 2012 Saturday March 3 BMU 314 - 11:00-12:15 An Omnivore's Dilemma: The Myth of the Sustainable Meat Movement Robert C. Jones, CSU, Chico Recently, folks like Michael Pollan ('The Omnivore's Dilemma'), farmer Joel Salatin, authors Stephen Budiansky ('The Covenant of the Wild')and Nicolette Hahn-Niman ('Righteous Porkchop'), and Chef Simon Fairlie ('Meat: A Benign Extravagance') have popularized a movement known variously as the sustainable meat movement, the humane meat movement, and the conscientious omnivore movement. They argue that though animals are feeling, sentient beings, meat-eating remains ethical and sustainable since meat-eating is, in some sense, "natural." Professor Robert C. Jones argues that these arguments are misguided and that conscientious omnivores like Pollan rely entirely on flawed and untenable notions of 'natural'. He further argues that veganism remains a viable and ethical alternative both to the cruelty of current factory farming practices and the ethical confusions inherent in the humane meat movement. Just thought I'd share this upcoming event....Last Wednesday, authorities made the horrific discovery of 50,000 dead and dying chickens at an abandoned egg farm in Turlock, Stanislaus County after being sent an anonymous tip-off. The birds, which had not been fed for two weeks, were left to die in their metal cages. Upon arrival, 17,000 of them were found dead. Animal rescue groups were contacted and three groups, Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, Animal Place, and Farm Sanctuary saved nearly 5,000 of the remaining birds. 100% OF THE BAKE SALE PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED to the three shelters to help provide food and care to the rehabilitating birds. Drop by to try some yummy vegan goodies! Paradox Fitness 986 C1 East Avenue Chico, CA 95926 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/201455726629330/

What a great cause for a bake sale! (Not great that it happened, of course, but great to be doing something about it!) I wish I could come be of help, but alas. Good luck, and I hope it goes well!

I'm glad to know of a couple of other animal sanctuaries that need support. They must be busy but I'm going to contact them. I have sadly, at this time, withdrawn my donation support From Farm Sanctuary.

Good luck, and I hope it goes well! It went surprisingly well! We raised $360, divided among the three organizations. For Chico, that's a lot! Plus there was some good outreach to non-vegan folks. Thanks for your good wishes! BTW - I made some most excellent mango buttercream cupcakes that were very well-received.

I am so excited! Two friends from the Chico vegan community have started a vegan bakery... They don't have a storefront yet, nor are they taking orders...but they have a website! I have sampled their baked deliciosities at potlucks and bake sales and can't wait until I can have them on demand. I will update when they are open for business. LINK: http://www.chicobakingcompany.com/This will be one more reason you should come visit Chico. ALSO: Is anyone going to the Farm Sanctuary Hoedown? I'll be volunteering on both days, so if you get a chance, look for me! I'll put 'quagga' on my name badge.

I am SO pleased to announce that Chico now has vegan pizza, vegan sushi, vegan cupcakes, and vegan doughnuts. Vegan Pizza - Woodstock's in downtown Chico now uses FYH vegan mozzarella AND its gluten free crust is vegan (which puts it one step ahead of Ameci's pizza in the Bay Area). http://www.woodstockschico.comVegan Sushi - Aonami Sustainable Sushi -- has vegan sushi rolls that are out of this world. If you are familiar with Shojin in Los Angeles, it's on a par with that. Definitely worth the pilgrimage. Even the miso soup is vegan (they use a shitake mushroom broth). Plus they have a whole boatload of edamame with different seasonings. Great service, great presentation, great prices. https://www.facebook.com/AonamiSushiVegan Cupcakes - Chico Baking Company doesn't have a storefront yet, but they make vegan cupcakes, cookies, and cheesecake to die for. They bake to order for pickup on Saturday and soon will be carried in local restaurants. So. Damn. Good! http://www.chicobakingcompany.com/Vegan Doughnuts - Donut Rising has vegan doughnuts three days a week http://donutrising.com/So...Chico vegans are doing well, thank you very much! Y'all should come by and visit!

I just learned that there has been significant outrage from the Chico State Agriculture Department about a Meatless Monday event that the campus animal rights group has helped coordinate. They have been making negative comments on Chico State's Facebook page and on the CFAR Facebook page. I thought maybe PPK could help by showing your support for Meatless Mondays by posting your opinions as comments to CSUC FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/CaliforniaStateUniversityChico. The Meatless Monday meeting is on Tues. Oct. 9th at 530 pm in BMU 209. Kristie Middleton from the Humane Society of the United States will be talking about the Farm Animal Rights Movement and the HSUS Meatless Monday campaign. Thank you. In other news, our vegan baking company, Chico Baking Company, has just worked out a deal with our co-op to supply vegan baked goods once a week. I am at this moment munching down on a delicious vegan pumpkin cinnamon roll! Here's their FB profile: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chico-Baking-Company/

This is a nice little cafe right in the middle of downtown Chico, across from CSUC, open every day. http://gogiscafe.webs.com/menuThere are other nice places, too, but these are the most vegan-friendly in town, in my opinion.

I am so excited that Carol J. Adams will be coming to Chico in April!
What: Author and scholar Carol J. Adams will speak about her work and the recently released anthology Defiant Daughters: 21 Women on Art, Activism, Animals, and the Sexual Politics of Meat, for which she wrote the forward. Where: Chico State University, Selvester's Cafe, Room 100 When: Wednesday, April 3, 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Cost: Free!
There will probably be some kind of vegan dineout set up beforehand. I'll post the info if/when that gets set up.
