I've been to NYC twice before, but this is the first time I'll be there as an adult and without someone that knows their way around. I'm going with my boyfriend, who has never been.

Any fun info on where to stay and eat near the theater district would be helpful! I'm checking out supervegan.com but I'm crepe at directions and things like that. We want to be able to walk wherever we go and since I haven't booked a hotel yet it makes the planning harder.

We'll be there November 18-21 if anybody wants to hang out with us, but we're lame!

technically, you can walk wherever you want to go, but I think you should consider taking public transportation since there's nothing really good in the theater district and in november you never know what the weather will be like, so if you want to get all the good vegan food you may have to get on the subway or a bus.

I'm terrified of having to navigate the subways, but if only a metro card stands in my way of actual vegan restaurants, I guess I'll have to suck it up.

One more serious question for you New Yorkers:
Do ice cream shops still sell ice cream when it's freezing out? Also,will I even still want ice cream?

in answer to your ice cream question: YES! lula's is always open and you will always want it! Last winter I walked from Lula's to the subway eating an ice cream cone with gloves on because I really wanted ice cream, but I also really needed to get home.

the subways are not that difficult to navigate. you can do it!

And the theater district is super convenient for most subways. I leave places sometimes only 15-20 min before showtime and I'm still in my seat before 1/2 the people. Are you seeing shows???

well at least this is all good news! I used the subway on one trip before but my friend was a pro. We didn't even have to stop and look at the board or anything. I have the WORST direction sense in the world, even here in AL.

We're only seeing one show-- The Book of Mormon. I've seen several before and my boyfriend doesn't like musicals OR sitting still, ha. We're used to cold though, at least Chicago-cold, so that's no big.

Oh my god you AND boyfriend and the rest of the world are going to flip your shiitake right out loving BoM. Sooo lucky!

Yup. Lula's is totally the place to be, even in the winter.

The other vegan ice cream shop is Stogo, where they kicked melisser, acht and I out into the freezing cold with our ice creams because they were closing (but nowhere near done cleaning) and I ended up throwing part of mine away because my hand was shaking too hard to hold it.

Well then there must be a reason I've heard so much about Lula's and nothing about Stogo.

also Stogo doesn't have cones. I've heard their ice cream is great--I've had it once, probably not enough to compare. You should probably try both!

If Stogo were the only vegan ice cream place in the area I'd say it was good, but since Lula's is only a short distance away, I say why go to Stogo? Stogo just doesn't compare at all.

I want Lula's 3x a day.

They treated us like crepe too. I refuse to go there. People at Lula's are lovely and seem to like dealing with customers.

i actually really like stogo! but if you want a real ice cream shop-style sundae experience, lula's is the spot.

also, i've never had a bad experience there, so that helps.

Some of Stogo's flavors are good, others are kind of icy. They're pretty hit and miss, while Lula's is consistently awesome.

I didn't mean to turn this into a Stogo vs Lula's thread, sorry. I just don't recommend going there in the winter.

Zen Palate is in the Theater District. It's pretty basic vegetarian (mostly vegan) Asian food. I find most of their food a bit too greasy, but I love their Tong Mein Noodle Soup and eat it almost every day in the wintertime. Especially if I have a cold.

If you're wandering closer to Times Square and just want quick takeout, Culture Espresso carries food from V-Spot, a vegan restaurant in Brooklyn, in the fridge case. I like their lasagna cold out of the package better than I like it at the restaurant!

I like fighting about Stogo vs Lula's. I agree about the iciness of the ice cream at Stogo. I like it ok and I've never been kicked out or anything, but the people at Lula's are really nice and the ice cream is never icy.

I think we should plan a full day of Stogo v. Lula's. We have to start at Stogo, have one thing, go to Lula's, have one thing, and go back and forth (the exercise will help!) until we have tried everything. Decisions must be informed!


Also, Maoz is at like 43rd/8th. Always my in-between-Saturday-shows dinner.

We stayed on 45th between 6th and 7th, and the only restaurant we found in that area was Franchia. It was pretty awesome though. Kimchi & vegan skushis. om nomz.

Creep, I think that's exactly where we're staying too.

Supposedly there's a bagel place right down the road.

it's NYC. there usually is!

Step away from the theatre district as often as possible!!! NYC is vast and has so much more to see than that! As a lifetime NYer, that is my most hated part of the city, and I know a lot of people think that's where they need to be, but it's not! Go downtown! go to museums! Go to Central Park! Go uptown! Head out to Brooklyn and Queens if you have time!!

Re: the subway. Get map. Ask someone on the platform how to get to where ever if you're confused and they will tell you. In great detail. Other people will probably chime in (NYers loooove to give subway directions - really! It's like a competition for us.)

I agree. In retrospect, I wish we'd stayed in a less populated part of the city, because we didn't do ANYTHING in that area, but we had to walk through all the crowds to get to train stations. We mostly just ate vegan food and went to parks and museums/galleries.

this was what i was coming in here to say.....

also, cstadt, if the subway freaks you, the buses are super simple. they (mainly) only go up one street and down another, you seriously can't go wrong, and if you miss your stop you can SEE where you are.

and if you guys have an ice-cream competition i will cry. well, i'll cry in november from my spot on the beach..... make sure you take a plaster cast of Tofulish's belly while you're there, she should be pleasantly rounded by then!!
