Stupid second wave feminists...What did you accomplish? Oh yeah...
***Griswold v. Connecticut
***Equal Pay Act of 1963
***Extended Affirmative Action to include women
***Title IX
***Title X
***The start of making marital rape illegal (First law wasn't passed until 1976)
***Equal Credit
***Roe v Wade
***Pregnancy Discrimination Act
***Pushing for women to be admitted to places like military academies, NASA...
***Almost passed the damn ERA
***No fault divorce which didn't exist until 1969
***Grass roots women's health organizations were founded.
***Sex segregated wants ads were legal until 1973
***Women's studies courses added to universities
***Women were no longer excluded by default from juries

This was all before 1980 and the start of the Porn Wars. So, basically, the second wave feminists kicked asparagus. The movement was not perfect but neither was the gay rights movement that started in the late 60's or the civil rights movement. To dismiss what was accomplished from about 1962 to 1980 is to dismiss most of the rights that women take for granted today.

The woman sitting at the table near my grandparents, aunt and I (all of whom are hard of hearing, save myself) at the Indian place we went for dinner who spent something near 45 minutes saying things like "women in business should be careful and appreciative for the jobs they do have, in the past they wouldn't even be able to go above being a secretary. They expect too much!"
and "you girls can't take care of yourselves, you need a husband to protect you"

she was probably in her 30's.
It took a lot of effort and concern for my grandparent's social comfort for me not to turn around and engage her in some discourse.

Feminists who don't recognize privilege.

I had a rocking time at a feminist gathering in Winnipeg, and it was really intense and I'm still processing it all. I had a lot of fun, but some things continue to bother me.

We had a sex work panel, and I think its good that they included the voices of sex workers. The problem was that the two people on the panel who were advocating for the Nordic model (decriminalizing prostitution but keeping johns and pimps criminalized) were the only women of colour, were specifically talking about prostituted women and how women of colour are disproportionately affected and trafficked. Not another soul talked about race. There was an academic who talked about how most sex workers were not trafficked and love their work, but in her statistics she included all sex workers, including legal sex workers like porn actors, dancers, sex phone line workers, etc. That isn't to say that they aren't all sex workers, but when they're saying that the ladies advocating for the Swedish model had bad statistics, it wasn't that their statistics were wrong, but that they were far more specific and weren't talking about dancers or escorts or film stars. The most vocal sex worker there was white and a university student, and shamed the abolitionists for "saying I'm a victim!" Well, you're not who they are talking about. We could have had a productive discussion about sex work, but we didn't talk about privilege and hierarchy even among sex workers, and I've been noticing that whenever this comes up.

Again, had a rocking time over all, but there were a lot of problems, the sex worker identity group got stormed by people who thought it was for debate, and someone ended up calling someone a slut, and the anti-racist and anti-colonialist action group got over run by white people who thought that their own cause was more important than, you know, racialized women and aboriginal women? I thought it was so strange that anyone would think that that action group was for anything else. It seemed like a lot of people who showed up to the gathering didn't really look into what kind of gathering it was (very far left, I had someone in my demilitarization action group who was shocked that anyone would want to get rid of the military) and we didn't allocate time to educate everyone on privilege and safer spaces. Some never heard the term white privilege before, and I think the organizers were unprepared for that, at least on the level that it came out.

A (male) classmate told me recently that he admires my ability to remain at ease in a situation where people are uncomfortable and the tension is high. It was quite complimentary, until he tacked on "...and I wouldn't normally say that about a woman."

My sister always makes sure to mention how crazy/bisque-y/unreasonable/dramatic/stupid/etc. women are. It's like she is so desperate to prove to males that she's not One Of Those Girls that she has come to believe that all other women are dumb and unreasonable and dramatic.

Ugh, story of my life! Sounds like a serious case of Special Snowflake Syndrome. "Other women are so bisque-y and dramatic, but not me! I like to hang out with the guys, because there's, like, so much less drama."

She has said nearly exactly that to me! Funny how people like this never suspect that they are the cause of the drama.

Sure, because not fitting some nonsense stereotype makes you sooooo unusual! I often get some guy making a blatantly sexist generalization, and when I argue that I'm nothing like that, they always argue that I'm just an exception. So I'm supposed to let him get away with that, because he claims he doesn't mean me? Nope, forget it.

I have a (female) friend who drives me up a wall with the "this is how women act" crepe. She has this insane friend who gets mad at her all of the time, calls and texts her every second, yells at her, calls her names, makes fun of her, threatens her, demands things of her, hates and makes fun of all of her other friends and gets mad at her when she hangs out with anyone but her. If someone wants to go on a group activity (like hiking or camping) she'll refuse to go and then make my friend feel guilty and stuff. Anyway, I keep telling my friend to dump this nut and that she shouldn't stand for it and then she'll say something like,"Oh, well you know girl friends!" Um, no. That's not how women are, that's how your "friend" who needs therapy is. She'll always give a bunch of excuses about how "that's just how women are! You know!"

Every time I explain to her that this behavior is not normal and how she is enabling her and rewarding her for her poor behavior she will just keep on giving me the "this is how women are" stuff. She's one of those people who believes in "all women play mind games." Noooooo, it's just that you don't stand up for yourself. That's not a woman thing, that's a you thing.

Yeah, let's point out how awful and inaccurate this comic is by making fun of her clothes and calling her a hooker "on purpose to upset the more sensitive readers we tend to attract" (see author comment). what the fizzle, vegansaurus?

Wow. And her response is just...wow. I'm really getting sick of the writers there. Almost every time I read that blog now there's some stupid shiitake going on. Very immature and not helping vegans in the least.

eta: I'm really pead off that she's responding to her readers complaints by making fun of them while at the same time being a total hypocrite.

My co-worker said the reason I received more attention than he did at a poster session at a recent conference was because I'm female. It couldn't possibly be because I'm more engaging, the research I presented was more interesting, etc! Geeze Louise.

My uncle in Texas. He thought because I was female, I couldn't figure out Philadelphia and I'm dumb as a rock (I live in Pennsylvania as well which makes him think I have a low IQ). I hate to tell him I was on of 500 art students enrolled in the only all women's visual arts college in the US, made the Dean's list 4 times, and graduated with a straight A GPA. And he doeso the same with my younger sister. She's still in college but in Business Management and in the Honors Program in her college with straight A's as well. It takes all my might to just give him an evil look and not to go on a yelling ranting rampage.

Bill O'Reilly has said that women won't use birth control because they're "blasted out of their minds" when they have sex, and now this jackass has compared no co-pay birth control to the government paying for manicures and pedicures. fork off.
