i'm all about art right now. seriously, i wish i didn't have to do anything but listen to jazz, go to art exhibitions and look at designer furniture. it's kind of a problem.. aaanyway. art. i am really into art photography. it's awesome. i like when fashion photography becomes art, like Helmut Newtons works. i am definitely also digging on Evgeny Mokhorev. i really enjoy light installations. i saw a japanese artist who made an amazing installation in the danish museum of modern art, Louisiana (definitely worth a visit if you're ever near Denmark. one of the most beautiful places i've ever been and they have so much a m a z i n g art) actually, i went there and saw an exhibition on Jacob Holdt's american pictures http://www.american-pictures.com/ and went to a lecture about it a few weeks later. it made me want to be a hobo for a week. what are your favorite artists? pieces? share!

I used to be very into art and graphic design when I was in high school, both looking at it and making it. Then I went to engineering school and lost all trust in my practice and judgment because I wasn't getting any formal training like my buddies in art school. Silly, I know. I have a weird fascination with art revolving around words or text. Typographical work too. I watched the documentary Helvetica the other day ; Wally thought I was nuts for spending 90 minutes listening about a font. An artist I have liked for years is Sophie Calle. I like that she incorporates a lot of writing into her art. She did some collaborative work with Paul Auster, which is pretty awesome. I have a copy of her "Double Game" book series and of "Exquisite Pain", which is half photography, half text, and is about the 90 days before and the 90 days after her worst breakup.

As mentioned in the love thread, I love Florian Bertmer: Here's a collaboration he did with Seldon Hunt (some of whose stuff I really like, some I don't).... click on it for a bigger version.

one of my favorite artists is Euan Uglowi do occasionally worry that this makes me a boring crasshole. i also really like Robin Williams, but not so much her more recent technicolor-ish work. i could blab about painters for much longer than anyone cares to read though.

i loooove annette kraft van ermel. luckily she lives in my city so i can go to her house and see her shows all the time. she's wonderful. she does abstract oil and wax paintings, her colours are beautiful, so much more amazing in person. she said she takes inspiration from nature - colour, subject matter, but it's not completely evident in her work. i also love kiki smith's work. she is a sculptor who investigates the fragility and vulnerability of the body.

I am fairly convinced that my friend might be Eva Hesse re-incarnated. She did this piece in college before she even knew who Eva Hesse was: She REALLY needs to update her website, but here is more of her work.

Hey, I went to school with her! She graduated a few years before me, so I never met her, but I remember seeing some of her paintings in a show - she's got skill! Here are some of my favorites: Beth Cavener Stichter Ivan Bilibin Scott Radke There are so many more, but I don't want to overload the thread!

I tend to be drawn towards the older style. I love the Pre-Raphaelites, Howard Pyle, Arthur Rackham, Aubrey Beardsley & Frida Kahlo.

I like (some of these people also make films):
Eugene Meatyard Sally Mann Joel Peter Witkin Francis Bacon Mike & Doug Starn a lot of "Lowbrow" art (Mark Ryden, Todd Schorr, Elzabeth McGrath, etc.) Dame Darcy The Brothers Quay Jan Svankmajer Francesca Woodman Diane Arbus Zdzislaw Beksinski Edward Gorey Harry Clarke
...so, mostly "creepy girl art", really, if that makes any sense.
