How long has it taken? $175-200/hour seems to be the going rate for established artists that I've seen.

Oh cool. The first session was four hours and I paid $600 (CAD, not that that means any difference these days). I thought it was reasonable, especially since he worked hard understanding/sketching the concept I'd hoped for. I just hope it'll only be another two hours, because I cannot believe how much money I am spending on this. I don't usually spend money on stuff that isn't food and rent and a billion dollars when I go to the dentist, and I feel guilty.

I like the idea of getting a piece for a price and then it takes however long it takes. (Instead of a per hour price). I suppose this is mostly because my friend got a tattoo from a girl that took for-fuckin-ever and I think the girl was just slow and I feel my friend could've paid a lot less elsewhere. (But she's happy with it)

That's kind of why I'm afraid of getting it finished. I don't feel like he works slow, but the rough quote for the full tattoo was less than what I've already paid. That doesn't both me--I just want to make sure I have enough money to give him a great tip, because I love the piece.

SoS - have you decided between the King and Carcosa yet? I've been having dreams about the King in Yellow (yes! really!), so I need to know.

Meet my little Grr Arrgh dude, done today (which explains the shiny greased-up-ness of it). He's the logo of Mutant Enemy, Joss Whedon's production company under which Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse and (of course) Dr. Horrible were made. The Whedonverse makes me happy and inspires me and cheers me up when life is being a fishy croissant and it makes me warm inside, and now I'll never be without my source of warmth and joy. :) Done with Waverly ink at the Bunker in Breda, the Netherlands!

My newest tattoo. I got the ankh in 2003, and had it touched up this past December. For some reason I only have pictures of 2 out of 4 tattoos. My other tattoos are moon and stars on the lower right side of my back, and a Jesus fish and cross on my left calf. The Jesus fish and cross is getting changed into a Darwin fish in the next couple weeks. **edited to fix ginormous pictures.

I've been in contact with an artist about the artichoke tattoo and he can do it in August a few days before I head over to the west coast/VVC!
I sent him an email with a long description of how I want it, and attached photos. Since this is my first and the description I sent is really specific, do I expect to see the drawing the day of? Or sketches via email, or is it reasonable to see if we can meet in July for a short consultation and see what he drew up?

All these kick asparagus tattoos are making me want to run out the door and get my next one done. I smell an eBay garage sale coming on. Normally you see the drawing the day of and you can make changes then, however, it is your tattoo and you are paying for it, so don't feel shy about calling him up and asking him about the progress, it is going to be on you forever after all. It might actually work out better that way because I find that when I show up to get the tattoo I'm so excited and too impatient to really give the design a good look over.
