my husband & I are going to be vacationing in PDX in September and we are flying into and out of Seattle since it was cheaper. we are spending about 2 days in Seattle before flying back to Boston.

any vegan must go to's in Seattle?

also has anyone ever been to Fremont Oktoberfest? my husband is big into beer and craft brewing and we're wondering if Oktoberfest is worth it. he read somewhere it was kinda crappy

We've got tons of vegan yumminess. If the dining guide doesn't wow you, let us know what you might be looking for specifically. Everyone's going to tell you that you have to go to Georgetown Liquor and get a Picard, and I'm going to agree with them.

I haven't been to the Fremont Oktoberfest (how? I don't know...) I know a few people who have walked home on their lips, so it can't be too crappy. :P If you go, you should know Hale's Ales adds gelatin to everything but the Kolsch. (I don't know anything about beer, but a friend's brother works there and made sure I knew when they de-veganized everything else.)

Space Needle (not paying to go up in it methinks, cant imagine $20 is worth it)
Pike Place area
original Starbucks
Fremont area
Fremont Troll
Crocodile Cafe (the indie kid in me wants to go here)

and if we have time the Hiram Chittenden locks

The Space Needle isn't really worth is unless it's a crystal clear day (and maybe not even then.) I mean, it's a great view and everything; it just shouldn't be so blasted expensive.

Pike Place Market is worth a wander. And all of downtown is pretty walkable. Pike Place to Pioneer Square isn't far at all. I've lived in WA for 21 years and I still haven't done the cheesy Underground Tour that leaves from Pioneer Square, but I mean to one of these days.

You'll wait in line approximately forever if you want to order from the original Starbucks during tourist season. But Cinnamon Works is near there so you can work on a cookie the size of your head while you wait.

The Locks are one of my favorite places to waste a sunny afternoon.

The Underground Tour is kind of fun.

Take a ferry ride!

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame/Experience Music Project is right by the Space Needle and it is awesome. It's about $15 but it's admission to two museums.

Take the ferry to Bainbridge Island and eat at Emmy's Vege House! I haven't been there yet, but my roommate says it is tasty! (I'm also not sure if everything is vegan or if just some stuff is.....)

I thoroughly enjoyed Araya's lunch buffet when I was in Seattle last month. I would have gone back a second day in a row if there hadn't been so many other vegan places to check off my list in the short time I was there.

Carmelita in Greenwood if you want a really nice dinner. My husband and I went there for our anniversary last month and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. So yummy! It's vegetarian, so not everything is vegan, but the stuff that is vegan is outstanding.

how far is greenwood from like downtown seattle?

Greenwood is a pretty straight shot down Aurora/Highway 99 from downtown. I live there and work in the financial district. It's about 7 or 8 miles. Travel time depends on traffic/time of day of course. My bus ride is half an hour-ish in the morning.

Why are you asking? If you're looking for a place to stay, I'd warn you to steer clear of hotels on Aurora. I'm sure the chain hotels with recognizable names are fine, but the highway area is a smidge rough (prostitution, mainly.) Seattle is a really safe city and I think my neighborhood a couple blocks west of Aurora is perfectly nice, but I wouldn't be excited about checking into a no-name hotel on Aurora.

ETA: never mind, you're probably asking because of the Carmelita recommendation! And Carmelita is west of Aurora in a perfectly lovely location. But I'll keep my warning up there just in case. :P

yes yes, take the ferry to Bainbridge and go to Emmy's! We live out there and my kids are crazy for Emmy's, crazy I say.

Okay, where should we stay when we visit Seattle for our anniversary?

Just my two cents as a Seattlite...

If you're going to hit up the market/Pike Place (which you definitely should), skip buying coffee at Starbucks once you've witnessed the insane crowd of tourists out front and head less than a block away to Seattle Coffee Works- one of the best coffee shops in Seattle and is locally owned/operated/roasted/etc.

Check out the Seattle Central Library about 5 blocks away. It's architecturally stunning with an amazing view from the top floor. It's the kind of building that makes you stare in amazement once you're inside. And, of course, it's free.

My favorite place for vegan food is Bang Bang cafe- if you like Southwestern fare they fly their chilies in from New Mexico and make the sauce on-site. Best breakfast burritos (well, I think they're anytime burritos) in town and they have an amazing chipotle (vegan) mac and cheese. Also if you're into Vietnamese the fresh rolls at Long Vietnamese about 3 blocks from the market are pretty darn awesome.

Agreed- the Space Needle is so-so but there are several parks with amazing views- check out Kerry Park for the view, Discovery park for a view & a walk, or Myrtle Eswards/Olympic sculpture park for a view/walk on the waterfront.

Yes, Kerry Park has a great view (and if you walk up there, a great workout!)

Agree with FootFace- the underground tour is pretty fantastic. And worth it even for locals.

Gas Works is another park that's nice. Hilly and grassy and you can watch boats go by.

Skip the Needle- there are so many other cool things to do than that.

I'ma make biker boy take me on the underground tour. He's lived here his whole life... bet he hasn't done it.
