it definitely doesn't top it, but my pop pop decided to be called uncle frank when i was about 22ish. Still don't get it, and i still just don't address him by any name.

This is not actually that weird if you know the backstory, but EVERYONE called my great grandmother "Mutti." And no one ever explained it to me. It was only when I took German in school that I realized oh, they all call her "mommy."

ETA: It's especially funny because I thought her NAME was Mutti and did not understand her relationship to me.

My friends son calls his grandmother Mars...and so does everyone else now.

My brother and I sometimes refer to our dad by strange names (but not to his face), my niece overheard us once and then proceeded to call her grandfather Grampa G-Dawg.

My grandmother insists that my daughter refer to her as "G-Nana". While I understand that she's attempting to appear more "youthful" and somehow more culturally relevant, I don't think she's quite aware of the mental image she brings up. Gangster Nana!

There's one great aunt in our family who everyone calls Dut. I really forking hate saying it, it doesn't please my ear.

I call my grandma "MawMaw Glasses" because her name is Gladys and I was a child once who could not pronounce that. The better part is we call my grandpa "PawPaw Glasses"

I called my maternal grandmother "plain grandma" for years. Apparently she got the name because my paternal gma liked for us to use her name, as in Grandma ____ and it was an easy way to tell them apart. I like mawmaw and pawpaw glasses better.

In my family, grandmothers are always "memere." It's French for grandma. I don't know any other Americans who use it.

One of my kids' great grandmas (their dad's grandma) is called G.G. by all of her great grandkids. They call my grandparents Grammy and Grampy, but my parents are just plain old Grandma and Grandpa.

Two of my cousins call our grandparents Meemaw and Peepaw.

My mom is now "Grandmo." But I didn't top anything.

I used to call my grandma "graham cracker". Well, I did a couple of times, anyway.
My kids have nana or nanny, and papa or poppy. Their Polish grandma is babcia, which is, you know, Polish for grandma. So, yeah, we're really original around here.

My nephew calls my brother-in-law's parents ye ye and nai nai, but that's not all that unusual if you're chinese.

My parents are nana and papa to all their grandkids.

my paternal grandparents are grammie and grumps. my parents had the first grandchild (me) and asked them what they wanted to be called. they told us grammie and grumps, so that's what we called them. then the next grandchildren came along and my aunt and uncle decided that they didn't like grammie and grumps and renamed my grandparents. so now my cousins call grammie and grumps "nana and papa" which also happens to be what my maternal grandparents are called. it was extremely confusing when i was a kid.

Dudley (paternal grandma), Lottie, Dottie (great aunts)...

My mom's dad I called Poppy. Her mom wanted me to call her "Grandma Nana Barbara" but I couldn't manage to say that at the age of 2. Go figure.

hindi: dada/dadi - for dad's dad and mom
nana/nani - for mom's dad and mom

my own grandmothers: bhiji - my dad's mom, this is punjabi
didima (shortened to dida) - my mom's mom, this is bengali

finally, i work with a little girl who calls her grandmother (mother's mom) 'Big Mama'...this cracks me up everytime.

Shae has a Grandma Dog (she has loads of shelties), Grandma Cat (she had 2 cats), Mom-Mom and then the typical granny and grandma.

My grandma is Gaggie, my grandpa is Ba. My older brother had a speech impediment when he was young so he couldn't say their names properly, and the rest of us followed suit.

My mom just wants her grandchildren to call her by her first name. That seems weird to me, because I don't call her Nora, I call her Mom. Will I start calling her Nora when speaking about her, but Mom when speaking to her? Confusing.



That is extremely common in Maine, where almost everyone is French Canadian. My grandparents were Grandma/Grandpa and Nana/Poppop (because I am not French Canadian), but here Memere is also a generic (and usually derisive) descriptive term for slow, doddering behavior. For example, someone who doesn't drive faster than 15 mph and forgets to turn off their signal is a "Memere driver."

I wonder if they use Memere in French/Creole-speaking areas of the southern US?

We did that too, but it was GG Grandma & GG Grandpa.. which makes it seem like great great, when it's just great.

My friends' kids call their grands stuff like 'wundawaa', 'yaya' & 'neenaw'. Whatever comes out of the 1st grandkids mouth is what they stick with.

my neighbors kids call one set of grandparents poopah (grandpa) and puma (grandma). i have no idea why. i got the impression that's just how the kids pronounced grandpa and grandma when they were young and everyone rolled with it. i've never heard it before.

so far my kid just calls everyone, regardless of gender, grandma.

Matt's grandmother is "plain grandma," too!

Yeah, it's fairly common here.

My family is from Maine, and before that Quebec, so I'm sure that's where it comes from. I've never heard it in the south, but then I haven't spent nearly enough time in New Orleans.
