I do most of my shopping at Berkeley Bowl, Wholefoods and Trader Joes. But, I hear so much about Rainbow that I've decided to scope it out. Is it worth the trip? Are there things there that I can't get at my stores?

Soy Curls and Food For Lovers Vegan Queso. I make a trip there just for those two things because I can't find them anywhere else... unless BB has them, which I don't know about since I've never been. Does Berkeley Bowl have a really good bulk spice (and tea) selection? That's something I really miss about Rainbow.

The only things that really excited me at Rainbow were things I couldn't really afford: awesome fancy mushrooms, packaged pre-made foods, House Kombucha, Dr. Cow cheese, kale chips.

But if you can't get House of Bagels bagels at the places you currently shop at, I'd pick up some of the (salt!) ones. They are so good!

You can't get soy curls there, I'm pretty sure. You CAN, however, get AMAZING vegan pecan toffee/brittle stuff. You can also get Dandies, peasant pies, donuts, turnovers, Sugar Plum Vegan baked goods, Dr. Cow, and Eat Pastry vegan cookie dough. If you only get one thing, get the toffee. It's amazing.

I live a couple blocks from Rainbow, and I love it.

It's quite abysmal, I'm sad to say. Rainbow has berbere. Berbere!

Whenever I have the opportunity to go to Rainbow, I usually pick up frozen knishes (so good), those eco-whatever cheddar crackers, vegan dog biscuits, a sushi log, and if I can afford it, Dr. Cow.

They've had soy curls for at least a month or so. I bought three packages a few weeks ago.

Do these have to be refrigerated? I've never been to Rainbow but I'd like to hit it up next time I'm in town. Will I be able to carry around soy curls for a 4+ hours without having them in refrigeration?

I think they're just dried, so I don't think they need refrigeration...

Chris, thanks for the update! I'll have to seek them out next time I'm there.

Thanks for the suggestions. So that I don't experience sticker-shock, are the prices more TJ or WF?

Bulk stuff might be cheaper but almost everything else is gonna be a bit more expensive than WF.

Closer to WF. Some things are cheap (especially the things you can get in bulk), but it's an all vegetarian, worker-owned co-op, so it's not really a discount type place. Enjoy!

Where did you find them in Rainbow? I was there yesterday and couldn't find them, and when I asked a dude about it he looked at me like I had two heads.

They were by the packaged tvp in the aisle with (I think) canned beans and all that - one of the shorter aisles between the produce and the dairy case. It was a while ago, but I'm 90% sure that's where they were.
