Mimicreme coffee creamer that's been left out overnight. (It was out for pretty close to 24 hours.)
I DID use it because I was not up for black coffee and it was the last tablespoon or so in the package, but I wondered what the PPK would do.

Jar of grapeseed vegenaise that was dated April 2011. It didn't smell or taste off to me.

Please give me the all clear, I haaaate wasting food, especially being an impoverished student and all :( i know it's too late for this, but you could definitely eat this. 3-4 hours is nothing for an unopened container. I always bring soygurts places with me for lunch and they are out for at least that long. it's fine. Yep I survived! It tasted completely normal.

I haven't opened it yet, so maybe the answer will be obvious when I do.
How about a bag of Bobs Red Mill Teff Flour, still sealed and has been mostly continuously refrigerated snce purchase 3 years ago. It says best by or use by (it's smeared) by May 2010.
I finally want to attempt injera.

yeah, any unopened Bob Mill's flours? I bought a bunch over a year ago and forgot about them. So they're a year over-expired.

Flours - probably fine. Smell and/or taste a little to make sure they haven't gone rancid. Other than that, the worst that would happen is that they might get some bugs in them, which you would see. That's unlikely to happen if they're refrigerated, though.

After a year or so I might be concerned, but I wouldn't really expect it to "go bad." It just might absorb moisture or not taste as good.

Raw cashews I bought at the health store a month ago. They are in a plastic bag and in the refrigerator. Eat em or throw em?

Assuming they are dry (not soaked), keep them. Unless they were at the store for a very long time, they shouldn't go rancid in a month. I keep my raw cashews for way longer than that and I don't even refrigerate them (they do last longer in the fridge though).

Good to know! I heard they spoiled a bit quicker than most nuts, but if you're still alive and keep them at room temp, I'll take my chances :)

That was a sad day....

katiepillars wrote: Nutritional yeast from the bulk bin thats been sitting in my cupboard since I first got AFR, many, many months ago? Well.. I just finished up using a small box of nutritional yeast that I bought in 2008, and it tasted more than fine. It was well sealed in one of those ziploc containers. (background: It was left in a small box that came with me after a move from Portland, OR in 2008, it got lost in my closet for a few years and then there was a nutritional yeast emergency in my kitchen a month ago..soo it was a chance I took...)

After a bad case of food poisoning, I'm very cautious. I hate to be wasteful, but if I'm not sure about something... it's going in the trash.

Tempeh, nowhere near the expiry yet. From Trader Joe's, in that crazy shrink-wrap package that is usually so obnoxiously close to the tempeh that you can barely open it without mangling the tempeh... except this time the package had swelled up and there was a pocket of air around the tempeh! It doesn't SEEM to smell off, but I just went to the gym, so I smell gross, so I don't know if I can even smell anything at the moment.
I think I'm gonna go for it, because the expiry isn't for like another month or two.
If this is a horrible idea, please stop me!

If this is a horrible idea, please stop me! I'd say it's probably ok. Things like that may or may not actually be vacuum packed, so there may have just been a difference in pressure from when it was packaged.

If this is a horrible idea, please stop me! I think the obnoxiously close thing is part of the process of making tempeh, but I'd just smell it. I've smelled off tempeh before and it's pretty obvious.
