A view of some of my garden... it's hard to see what I'm taking a photo of in the sun, so it's kind of hard to see what's going on. But see why I called this thread big green mess? In the front there those are poppies, a tomato, pineapple sage, lemon balm and unknown stuff coming up from a seed packet that said it was an edible flower mix. Yeah I crammed that stuff pretty tight! Broccoli and Cabbage! This is the only broccoli plant that survived, heh. You think it looks ready to harvest the one on top? It's romanesco. Fariytale Pumpkin and Beans (I think Maxibel). And weeds... heh. I left those weeds because I actually think they might be edible. I'll have to investigate. (The ones pictured here are hard to see what they are because I stepped on them, but I think it might be miners lettuce.) (edit, looked that up, it's not the one though I have some of that too... this one is spade shaped if anyone has an idea.) My one ripening tomato! It's from a plant start that we were selling at work who's top half completely broke off. I think that's why it set that fruit out before other plants, and also why it is not very dense like my other tomatoes. A bubbly heirloomy one! (I don't know the varieties of many of my tomatoes because I got most of them as 'mystery starts' at my work after they loose their tags and therefore can't sell them.) This one I do know, Sweet Million. They weren't joking about the 'Million' thing.

About the weed, I think it might be a sorrel. I also found out while looking that a bunch of seedlings I have been leaving are also edible; purslane. I've been leaving them because I thought they looked kind of like a succulent which was neat.

I like that you have no idea what's going on in your garden.

Yeah, it's true! I didn't exactly plan it that way but how can you say no to free mystery plants that would otherwise end up in compost?

Purslane is awesome! Tofumom has a potato salad recipe with purslane. I think Terry talks about it in VV, although I can't remember for sure.
I don't think it is a big green mess at all. It looks like a big green partay! Where do you work where you get access to seedlings? That's awesome. We just sell the equipment, but not plants. During the summer we usually have a tomato plant sale, but we didn't.
Anyway, I heart your garden!

Your garden looks similar to mine. I like letting things go wild too.
I also just googled purslane, and to my surprise, I definitely have been weeding it out of my garden! Now I know to save it and get those omega-3s.

Mars! Your garden is wonderful! Did you taste your mystery weed? Because if it's sorrel, you will know.

Well, going to my plot today for the first time in oh, about a week... >.>
I've been busy! Here's hoping my neighboring plots overwatered theirs and so it leeched into mine... Le sigh.

Huh, good news, nothing was dead or even overly wilty! Just some leaves here and there a tad crispy but not so much I think it would hurt any of the plants. Actually there were plots way worse off then mine, like totally wilted-over and pre-maturely ripening tomato kind of things. I told myself as punishment for their crimes I would eat some of those tomatoes... ;P
