Hey PDXers, I will be there briefly for a triathlon Labor Day weekend. I'm looking for a couple of lunch options for Saturday and Sunday. I really wanted to go to Homegrown Smoker, but it looks like they're only open M-F... can anyone confirm?
Anyway, what must I try for lunch Saturday? I'm open to try most anything as long as it's filling, delish and vegan. Post-race tradition is a big burrito... that'll be Sunday. Any suggestions for that?

Oh, well, that's good news! Their blog says M-F, but I see Saturday hours on fb... confuzzling. That solves Saturday, anyway.
Now I just need a post-race burrito, preferably the size of my head. :)

Hmm... burrito... I'm not a very discerning Burrito connoisseur, I mean I'm pretty content with a Laughing Planet one (not very mexican, more like a wrap really), but I hear that the very inconspicuous mexican cart on 12th and Hawthorne makes a good one. They have a sign that says "Vegan and Vegetarians Welcome". My partner and I enjoy that only one vegan is welcome. But this place is also kind of meaty. People rave about Los Gorditos, too, but I personally don't like their food, I find it quite bland.
Edited to add that the Laughing Planet one can be the size of your head.
Oh shiitake I just remembered! My favorite burrito! Yes, this one is really good, and from a cart with no meat in sight! Also, the size of your head! "Shelly's Honkin' Huge Burrito's" I believe it's called? "Shelly's" is definitely part of it. It's a small cart in Pioneer Square, downtown. Super fresh delicious ingredients. Yum. I'm getting hungry thinking about it. You have to eat it with utensils though, she serves it in a platter thing, I think she uses two tortillas actually...

Shelly's something-something burritos sounds promising. Thanks Mars, I'll look into that.

I feel like we're not going with the obvious here because maybe you hate them? Or I'm being crazy? Los Gorditos!!!
or...El Nutri! if you head to Alberta. You know, for post-run soft serve at Back to Eden.

I don't know what's obvious! I just want a burrito. 'Sides, Mars says Los Gorditos is bland. Which one of you is right, I wonder?

I think Los Gorditos is tasty. I ate a combo plate and two tamales when I was there. It was tasty! And enormous--I had to take leftovers home (shocking I know!).

Oh, I missed that! To each their own, always. All about personal taste. I like the multitude of vegan options at LG, the prices, the fact that both locations are on the street I live on, speed and those salty, salty beans. Plus, I'm friends with their business whiz of a daughter : ) I usually opt for the Soyrizo burrito. Honestly, I don't regularly consume burritos because they're soft and I am a mess, but I pick up one of these a couple of times a month. I really, really like the orange habanero (I think?) sauce, too.
I hear great things about the Proper Eats NoPo burrito...

Yeah their food might be really good but I really dislike this sauce, and dislike their green one, which leaves me with no sauce option! And I think their food is intended for their sauce, as I've never had it actually flavored at all pre-sauce. I normally love mexican hot sauces and salsas and things but there is just something odd about these sauces I guess, to me. Like something off with the garlic? I don't know!

I would pick Los Gorditos over Shelly's for sure! Is Shelly's even open on weekends? I don't like the canned tomato thing going on there. For downtown burrito carts, I like Fernando's (a few trucks over from Homegrown). They have cactus. But the proximity to HGS means I rarely go there! Also, HGS is open Saturdays just for the summer, so you might want to confirm that Labor Day weekend is included.
P.S. Rainbowwine - good list!

La bonita is my personal favorite! I always get the same thing...bean and rice burrito with guac added. Sounds simple but it's mindblowingly awesome with their green sauce, the beans are so yummy. Plus its 4 fi'ty and pretty giant.

Another Gorditos vote, here, love that they have been supportive of vegan life in Portland for so long. I usually get the soy curl fajita burrito, TASTY. La Bonita is good, too; get a tamale with your burrito if you go there. Javier's is like eating a salt brick. I like Cha Cha Cha every now and again, too.
I don't think the Shelley's cart is open on the weekends, but I may be wrong.

I better try this La Bonita burrito! Sounds good. I luv guac. And I agree I'm glad Los Gorditos is around, and being so awesome about vegan stuffs. Didn't want to imply they were bad! Just sadly I've never had anything I liked from there. :( BUT I haven't tried this soycurl fajita burrito! So maybe I should go do that. :)

Shelly's is usually open on Saturday's during the summer. Her cart is my favorite place to go for a burrito in town. If you don't like the canned tomatoes, get one of her fresh salsa's and smother it with one of her bottled hot sauce options.

Shelly is really sweet and it's awesome that she's one of the first carts that had a vegan option. But I don't really care much for her burritos. I love La Bonita, El Nutri and Por Que No. I need to try Fernando and the Gorditos burrito.

I'm on burrito overload at this point. I think I'm headed to Los Gorditos (they're open Sunday, I hope?) since it's "the obvious." :)
Y'all can keep comparing burrito notes, though.

Burrito overload? So does that mean you tried some burritos at PDX places? Or from pre-PDX?
Oh P.S. everyone, about Shelly's... I forgot but yeah, I used to ask for no canned tomatoes. She just gives you extra pico that way! It's yum.
