Group plans usually can't disqualify for preexisting conditions, so it shouldn't matter if he is diagnosed.

I could never get insurance on my own, but getting it when I had a job was no problem. You typically are not required to disclose any medical information when you enroll in a company plan.

He needs to talk to the benefits handler at his job.

They can have a six month exclusion period if you haven't had continuous coverage. But again, the HR person should know these things.

I think it depends on the quality of the insurance. My student insurance was a group plan I thought...and didn't ask anything about preexisting conditions. That is, until I used the insurance and then I had to prove prior coverage for things that were preexisting.

So yeah, more in the talk to HR camp.

I hope your friend enrolls for health insurance asap!

Early diagnosis and treatment is crucial with cancer. As many of you know, Mr. Nummers had stage 1 colon cancer earlier this year. He's completely recovered now, but if it hadn't been caught so early in a routine colonoscopy, his odds of recovery would have been much worse.

Also, if your friend isn't diagnosed yet, can the condition be considered pre-existing? I'm not an expert on insurance blahblah, but I thought that pre-existing had to be something that you had been diagnosed/treated for in the past.

fork this lame American lack of health insurance. I can't tell you how many of my clients' life stressors come from trying to afford taking care of their health problems. It's insane.

well, I still don't think they can get coverage until April. I don't know if that means he should just go get a diagnosis now and if it's positive try to find some way to get treatment for free. Or wait till he can get insurance and hope they cover it if it turns out to be cancer.

April is quite a long way away, I don't want to scare you but as nummers said early diagnosis with cancer is really important. My mother in law was diagnosed with cancer in early December and sadly it was too far advanced for treatment to be an option, she passed away in mid Februay.

The American healthcare system forking sucks, I'm sorry that he's even having to think about all this rather than just being able to go to the doctor.
