Yes. Soaking most kinds of seeds increases germination rate.

Ok! So that begs the question...should I soak most seeds?

My rule of thumb is if the seed has a hard shell, you should soak it. Most seeds have hard shells. The only ones I don't soak are dill, chamomile, and any seed that is super duper fine and tiny. Lettuce, carrots, kale, turnips, etc. are no-soakers.

I never soak seeds and have great germination rates. But I do water the crepe out of them until they sprout. So I guess it's the same thing?

Also, beets are the most fun thing to harvest in the whole world. So satisfying.

I hope they work! I know it's kinda late. The soaking water is pink!

I'm just getting mine started too, and we're pretty much in the same gardening zone. If anything, you should be able to harvest some greens and tiny beets. Chard is in the beet family, it just lacks the bulbous root.

Abbie, it probably just is a moisture thing. It is something someone in the trade suggested I do. I've had such good germination rates, I've never looked back.

You will probably be just fine, beet wise. They get very sweet if they get snowed on just a little bit!
