yay! welcome! and depending on how much of a commute you want to work, you could actually look for a place *in* bayview... it's pretty affordable, and like stephanie mentioned, nicely vegan-friendly.

My husband is still job-hunting, so where we end up depends on that too. I do LOVE Bay View. My sister lived there up until a few years ago and I have a few friends who currently live there. It's not ruled out!
Which reminds me, nobody has mentioned La Fuente on here... are their beans veg? We used to go there often.

oooh, la fuente! it's my favorite mexican restaurant, but they don't have tons of vegan options. [i always order the same thing at mexican restaurants, and it's simple, so i can eat it almost anywhere... but i don't often recommend la fuente in general just because their menu can be skimpy, vegan-wise, and they don't have any meat analogs.] anyhow... the black beans are vegan for sure. but i have heard yes, no, yes, no, yes, no so many times on the refrieds, that i avoid them now just in case.
other mexican spots to check out: belair cantina (has tofu), and cafe corazon (has vegan chorizo), both in riverwest. oh! and hector's (there is one in bayview, one in wauwatosa) is supposedly pretty vegan-friendly, though i've only been there once.

When I went to BelAir Cantina, everything was pretty good, but the tofu was really bland. That was shortly after they opened, so maybe they've changed that by now?
I second Hue in Bayview! Pho. Nomz.

I forgot to come back and say thanks for the Palomino recommendation! It was awesome! It was a nice, warm night that we ate there, so we got to sit outside and walked down to the water afterward. More importantly though, we had a TON of food. I think it was the first time I have ever seen my husband not finish his entire meal. We started with the toffalo wings, 1/2 each of tofu and seitan with bbq sauce and lots of ranch. I think we've talked about these every day since. I had the VLT sandwich with hush puppies and onion strings (and more ranch, yum!) and Chad had the seitan po'boy with sweet potato tots and jalapeno slaw. So good! Have I mentioned how excited I am to move to Milwaukee?! :)

I live in racine, which has very limited vegan options. Thanks for all the info on the restaurants mentioned. My friends and I can't wait to try them!

I am going to be in MKE over Labor Day weekend, and I cannot wait to go back to the Palomino!!! It was one of the highlights of my other trip to MKE... mmmmm, toffalo wingz. I might have to force myself to try something else this time. Esp if they have the mozzarella Teese stix.

I just saw the August date and I'm bummed we'll be out of town, but I'm definitely going to try to make it in September! i'm sorry, i just realized i never replied to this! the meetups that are shared via veganmilwaukee are the ones from meetup.com, so they're definitely not ppk-specific. sometimes a ppk person will show, but the meetup events are a little varied in their guests from month to month. BUT we definitely get together in smaller, privat-er ;) groups sometimes (with ppk'ers and such), and those are more fun anyway! so please let us know if/when you're around and we'll keep you in the loop!

If there are any Milwaukee vegans who couldn't make it to PDX this weekend, please stop by the Urban Ecology Center at Riverside Park tomorrow for the Eat Local Resource Fair! Compassionate Cake will be selling amazing, beautiful, local food-inspired vegan baked goods from 10 AM - 1 PM, and Sweet Amy's Bakery will be presenting a cooking demo (with samples, of course) -- Vegan Baking the Local Way! Just a few of the vegan cupcake flavors that will be available.. Sex and the Milwaukee City Cosmopolitan, Cherry Wine Chocolate Ganache, and Anodyne Soy Latte! Come on down, eat some stuff, and say hi! I'll be introducing the vegan baking demo at noon and the gardening demo at 12:30.

I finally got the toffalo wings at Palomino last night! oh my goodness...I'm so excited for dinner now, because I have the rest of them waiting for me. I just want to sit at Palomino and eat and eat and eat. Next time I'm thinking the teese sticks...I also want the fried pickles. goodness.

I've always been too scared to try the pickles. Someone reassure me that they are awesome?

I was thinking of doing a big vegan birthday thing maybe at Palomino the weekend of October 1st? School and sickness have been taking over my life the past two weeks so I haven't given it much thought yet beyond vegans, deep fried food, cake, and birthday.

Okay! We decided on Friday the 30th at Palomino then dancing! Maybe I'll make a facebook event or something.
I get my hair cut at Be U Salon on Oakland Ave a little past UWM. He's vegan and really nice!

Oooh, I like a good excuse to indulge at Palomino!
I like Vici on Hwy 100 in West Allis or Greenfield, I never remember which it's in. You can pick the level of stylist, so you can get a pretty inexpensive cut if you want.
Also, where is the best place to get bulk spices, flour, legumes and such?
BTW... I'm also all moved now! We ended up in Franklin and so far, so good!

Fizzgig, i get my hair cut out in new berlin--a friend from high school cuts my hair so i follow her wherever she goes. she's great but that's probably not convenient for you... but i've heard good things about be u from both AutumnVegan and morecuminthancumin.
kdub, i do my bulk shopping at outpost... probably the closest one to you is the bay view location? glad you're all moved in now!
looking forward to celebrating next weekend!!
