I'm broke and lazy and my flat little yard keeps flooding. I'm thinking of getting a rain barrel but everything I read about them is pretty biased about how awesome they are. Can someone tell me if it will just fill up too fast and all the water will end up back in the yard (and basement) right away? I would direct my downspout and sump pump into it, and maybe have a hose running to the back of the yard for when it gets too full. But (did I mention I'm lazy) if it fills up every day and makes me have to actually do stuff with it frequently, that wouldn't help. My alternative idea is to beg someone to help me dig a trench and a gravel pit to the back corner of the yard, but that might get swampy too. I'm in Maryland so it's often but not always wet. Thanks for your opinions.

A rain barrel won't catch enough water to fix flooding problems. An inch of rain on 1000 sq ft of roof will yield 620 gallons of water. A rain barrel won't divert enough of that.

You could buy more downpipe and send it out to pavement? Like a back alley or driveway?

I'd look into creating a rain garden.
