I'm going to be near a smallish Waitrose on Saturday. I don't normally get chance to shop there. Is there anything I can't live without getting??

Eh… they do cheapish tofu wieners? Cheaper than the health food shops, I mean. It's just slightly more expensive versions of the same stuff you get everywhere else, really.

They do Taifun tofu, fresh vegan pasta & ready made vegan pizza bases with the tomato sauce on them in the big one in Brighton. I also buy my canned artichoke hearts & pre-made breadcrumbs there. You don't like sweet stuff but if you did the Lazy Days Millionaires Shortbread & chocolate extract would be must buys.

I get canned pumpkin in my Waitrose. And seconded the fresh vegan pasta and Taifun. Their Organica chocolate and Doves Farm flour is cheaper than my local health food shop. If you're feeling extravagant, their own brand veg root crisps are v nice, and they have nice vanilla extract and lavender sugar and things in the baking section. (I don't really find it works out more expensive than Sainsburys on the things I buy regularly, plus they're a co-operative.)

What is the fresh vegan pasta? I only ever see the chickpea flour pasta with eggs in.

Oh wow, I shop in Waitrose and had no idea they did fresh vegan pasta, I will look out for that next week

Hoo! I've never seen that either! Waitrose and Tesco are are only choices in town (though Oxford has more, just a few miles away), so I'm at Waitrose frequently.

Ditto on the Organica chocolate. They have lots of nice ready made stuff, but nothing you'd die without I'm sure (pasta salad, spring rolls, etc.)

They have good root beer! :)

They also have a vegan sushi pack.

Oo I'm excited to discover this. It's bad that I know it though, as I've been given my mum's sushi rolling mat and I never use it. And I don't have money to spend on shop-prepared food.

Haha. See, this is the difference between America and the UK, right there. Good root beer is better than fine wine. :D (Hartridges is the good brand at Waitrose, not that gnarly Bundeberg stuff)

Heh. There is a lot of crepe rootbeer being sold in the UK. A&W is everywhere, but it's not good. This other brand (the name of which I seemed to have blocked out) with an American flag on the can is such vile swill that I can't believe no one has sued them for pain and suffering. :)

I tried root beer in america. It was heinous.

Root beer is OK as you long as you don't mind eating Germolene.

Ah. I heard someone else say that it smells like Germolene too. I'm going to have to do some sniffing next time I'm at the supermarket. (that should get some good looks from the shop staff)

I was just going to post this! It tastes EXACTLY like Germolene.

I've had it once… it's nasty. I think it must be one of those things that is delicious if you grew up eating it (Marmite, baked beans, butter*, Vimto), but otherwise tastes like sadness.



* My mum told me it would make us fat so we never had it in the house. Consequently, I really don't like the taste.

This, I remember going to McDonalds in the early 80's (it was still a bit of a novelty then) when they had root beer on the menu. I tried it because I heard about it (probably from Stephen King) and subsequently wanting to tear my tongue out by the roots.

well i have a local supply of Goose Island root beer, proper imported brewed stuff and it's delicious, a million miles removed from A&W or that carter's muck they sell in asda. bundeberg is okay, but nowhere near the best.

Vegan sushi! Is it good? I've not had sushi since I came over here because all of it looks suspicious.

Root beer (cheapo or otherwise), vegemite and vimto are three of my favourite items to consume.

Not sure what that says about my tastebuds.

and i also remember the mcdonalds root beer and loved it in my early 80's youth.

Ooh. Goose Island. I used to live about a mile and a half from where they brew this, in Chicago. Yum.
