Also, I want a prize for not destroying the vegan dietitian on twitter who just told me that diabetes is exciting! because we have so much to learn! And so many exclamation points to abuse!

also, that was a shitty thing to say, especially directly to someone who HAS diabetes. Jeeze! I mean, I get being excited to learn about things so you can help people, but that's not the same as saying the disease itself is exciting.

I don't go back to the doctor until the end of September. And I had to fight the clerks to get that appointment. (They canceled my usual 3-month appointment when I made the emergency one.) While scabs and pus aren't fun, nothing new has shown up since I stopped taking lantus, and I'm not yet worried about my body's ability to heal what's there. If that changes, I'll get an appointment sooner.


I think she was expecting me to say I'd cured my diabetes by going vegan, and didn't know what to say when I said I had type 1. But yeah, especially annoying since we were having a conversation about how medical professionals need to listen to their patients and take their culture into account when giving advice. And she was bragging about how good she is at it...

Aliks and Footie, do you have emergency supplies? Every time there's a natural disaster, I think "I should take care of that," but I never do. I have a hard enough time keeping up enough supplies for current use.

I'm not very good about emergency supplies. My glucagon emergency kits are expired. I have plenty of strips, though. And enough lancets to last me the rest of my life.

I'm in trouble.

I have glucagon, one in a kit here and one at school- and at my sons school a few boxes stashed in different places of glucose tabs, gel, annie's fruit bunny snacks, granola bars. I always worry they'll go on lockdown and he'll have a terrible low. I think I did this after seeing the movie Panic Room haha-I'm still pissed we don't have a glucowatch! I try to stock up on stuff, I'm paranoid that my husband could lose his job someday and we'll have to go through the whole insurance drama-so it's wise to refill even when it's not needed just in case. This came in handy when we moved out of state and had to find a new endo, and wait forever to get an appointment and new prescriptions.
We also have enough lancets to last us for life. We go through mail order and they always ask if we need more, makes me laugh.

I have glucose tablets stashed all over the place, but I don't keep glucagon at work. I don't trust people to know how to use it. I'd rather they just call an ambulance if things are that bad.

When I was in high school, back in the nph days, we had a fire during lunch time. And my vice principal called me a liar when I told her I had diabetes and needed to eat NOW. Why would I lie about needing a sandwich? Ditto a couple substitute teachers in elementary school who wouldn't let me go to the nurse's office.

And I had a boyfriend break up with me after we went to see Panic Room. Human stupidity scares me more than the possibility of a flood or earthquake, I guess.

what a jerk boyfriend! Did he think he couldn't handle you being with you locked up in a room full of MRE's? I never got why the mom just didn't open up one of those, it's better than nothing. We had problems with a sub last year, didn't have time for my son to eat a snack-I asked if she had time to call an ambulance and scare the children seeing my son have a seizure. She let him eat the next day.

It's hard to ask questions like that when a person is avoiding you... Current husband pre-opens the glucose tab bottles for me. He's a keeper.

I hate how we always hear "you can eat what you need to and cover it with insulin" but as soon as you mention vegan it's "oh noz the carbs!".

It's now been more than six months with this stupid allergic reaction, and I don't anticipate that I'll be healed before the end of the year. It largely a cosmetic issue, but I'm so so ready not to have giant sores all over my legs.

You know what's awesome about having a really bad reaction right after working out and sitting in your car sweating and feeling god-awful and waiting for your wife to walk from home to meet you at the car, and you keep drinking juice and feeling like you're dissolving?

Sorry, Footie. Good for you for keeping up the exercise, though!

I just got back from the endo, and it looks like all my allergic reaction sites from the lantus are going to scar over. It's entirely a cosmetic issue, but dammit I don't want 30 scars on my legs.

Another highlight from today. I was discussing foot health with my endo, and she told me that it's recommended that diabetics not cut their nails. Gee, that's practical.

We've had it too good for too long.

I got back on the horse (nv?). Just finished my workout. Took less humalog this morning and ate a little more than usual. I'm spooked!

Gary Scheiner is offering his online diabetes education classes for free in January, if anyone is interested. I've taken one before. The info is good. And Footface, there's one on exercising and avoiding hypos.

im on levemir and nova rapid. my doc told me that i need to shoot the levemir in my leg insted of my belly. but it hurts every single time...it burns and give me alot of pain. and on worst times there is pretty much blood coming out of my leg after the shot...im always afraid of giving myself levemir twice a day...it sucks...

Are you refrigerating it? Cold insulin can sting. You can leave insulin unrefrigerated for about a month so long as you don't get it really hot. Keep it less than around 85F. Talk to your doctor about this. It shouldn't be hurting every time.
