I saw no Kansas City thread, I think there should be one. I've lived in several different places in a 75 mile radius of Kansas City for the past 17 years. I recently landed a job there and will be in KC proper soon. As far as eating out, I totally dig the big three: FÜD, Cafe Seed and Eden Alley.
But of course, most places have a super secret underground vegan cult, and I want in. Back alley potlucks, kids on street corners peddling vital wheat gluten, underground CSA growing operations... or maybe just a vegan barber. Where's my people!!

Oh yeah... they do a pretty good pie. I totally dug City O' City's pizza when I was over in your neck of the woods AND it inspired me to make my own seitan buffalo wings (grew up in Western NY)!

My husband is a vegan from KC and his #1 favorite place is the Jerusalem Cafe in Westport. We also like the Thai Place in Westport. There is also Eden's Alley which is run out of a basement in a church on the Plaza and that's really good too.

I'm from a bit north of KC. I'm going to try out Mud Pie next month when I go to Overland Park. Unfortunately, I live far enough away that any time I want to go to KC I have to make a whole day-trip out of it. :(
Anywho, I've also heard that we're getting a Cafe Gratitude. I pretty excited about that!

Can I ask where you're from, Midwest Vegan? I grew up in St. Joe.

Ha, I thought so - I recognized the "near KC but not close enough to be convenient" description. I graduated from Central in 1995 and haven't lived there since, but I get back pretty often to see my grandmother. The rest of my family is in North KC now.

I graduated from Savannah in '06, but I've lived here to finish out my degree at MWSU. Most of my family lives in smaller towns farther north and near the Iowa border. I hope to be moving next summer though to a much more awesome place (Athens, Georgia) so I can finally get out of the black hole that is St. Joe.
But hey, since '95 we've gotten a Chipotle and a Hyvee that has an organic food section. LOL.

Any other recommendations? I may be coming through soon and don't know anything about Kansas City.

Panda, you should check out the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nelson Atkin Art Museum, they're right by each other and fairly close to Eden Alley.

I've ended up changing my route and won't be going that far north. I will however roll through Denver next week and eat biscuits at City O. I'll keep those in mind for a possible spring trip, though.

There's a Bo Ling's in the Zona Rose mall, which is close to the airport. I believe they have vegan options but I've never eaten there myself, but someone else will probably have a better suggestion.

I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning from Bo Ling's the last time I was there. My boyfriend and I went around suppertime and it was dead (which we thought odd). They got mad when I asked for no eggs in my noodles. And while I can't say exactly if it was them (I'm pretty sure it was) I was still hospitalized with food poisoning nonetheless.
On the plus side, I heard there's also an Indian restaurant near (or in Zona Rosa) now and I've heard really good things about it. I've never been there myself though, so I can't vouch for it's vegan-ness. There's also a Chipotle down Barry Road in North KC if all else fails. :)

Thanks to all for the help. I wound up eating at Buddha at the Zona Rosa mall. I went before the dinner rush and had a nice tofu and vegetable dish.

My husband is going to be working on a project for work in KC, so...ROAD TRIP! We will be there for at least a month, up to 9 months. Yay! I am looking forward to getting to know the city. We do a fair amount of traveling, but I have only had dinner at Whole Foods in Overland Park twice on our way through to Austin, TX and back. We are looking at corporate housing in the Garment District as our base of operations. I would love recommendations about where to get the best cup of espresso, what place/hood tends to draw out the vegan punk goodness underground or otherwise and how bicycle friendly the place may be?
Thanks!

You might want to check out the Westport area of town- I haven't spent a ton of time there but I that area is fun. As far as bike friendly, Kansas City is super spread out without a ton of bike lanes. I'm sure short distances wouldn't be a problem but if you wanted to go to Whole Foods from the Plaza, I feel like that experience might be awful. But there are also Trader Joe's there now! Yay!

Hola! If you haven't made it there yet, you may be able to find some interesting folks at the Mud Pie, which is a vegan coffeehouse/baked goods place on 39th St.

So far my findings after being here almost a month...
The Mixx has a few amazing options. The Green Eskimo Salad with smoked tofu they have is INCREDIBLE!
Waldo Pizza was pretty good too on SuperBowl Sunday with lots of options.
Oddly Correct Coffee - the blackcoffeesmiths are awesome. The finest cup of black coffee ever.
Bad Seed Farmers Market - awesome folks, super welcoming and helpful. I hope we get to stay into the growing season!
Lulu's Noodle Shop - was alright. Had a vegetarian/vegan menu. That was nice. We are a bit spoiled at home with some of the best Thai food ever from Sen Yai Sen Lek though, so it's hard to compete with our favorite.
I've shopped at: Sun Fresh, Cosentino's, Green Acres, Whole Foods - decent supply of Vegan supplies, but nothing great except at Whole Foods - which is a hike from Downtown KCMO, Green Acres at Briarcliff was good in a pinch, but RIDICULOUSLY priced. $6.49 for a box of Heart to Heart Kashi cereal is just nuts.
Yet to try but on my list:
Burrito Bros. in City Market Good You - food truck. Mudpie Succotash
Also found Scott Fitness - which is cool and super cheap compared to gyms at home.
Still looking for pho made with vegetable broth :)
