I'm a convert! I tried it for the first time today. I was worried about that drowning feeling, but it was surprisingly easy, and really helps the sinuses feel better.

I've discovered that I can only use it when I am sniffly, NOT completely stuffed up. When I've tried it when my sinuses are completely stuffed (as in, no air getting in at all when I inhale through the nose), the netipot water didn't come out, it just like...stayed behind my eyes somehow and gave me the worst headache. It was really weird. And I wasn't doing anything different from how I use it successfully. So scary.

I love my neti pot, but for some reason haven't used it lately. This thread has inspired me to start it up because my sinuses have been really painful lately.

I use a neti pot before yoga. I got all drippy after using neti pot and I went jogging once, because I stretched first. I found that doing a forward bend and hanging my my head down and blowing into a tissue gets all that stuff out that drips out later. So, I always do a forward bend to make sure I get all the water out now. Gravity wise, it doesn't make much sense but it really gets it out of the sinus passages.

I think if it's stuck up there for a while you're tilting your head too much. It should just be running up one nostril and out the other. Anything getting left up there runs the risk of infection starting. Blow your nose gently after rinsing and hoik up a couple of times to get it all cleared.

I will free my neti pot tonight from his winter sleep... allergies are trying to take over my life again.

I have a terrible fear of drowning. Would using a neti pot totally freak me out?

Probably. I don't really like using them because I feel like I'm drowning.

I personally was skeptical of netipots (as of many things) but I did find actual evidence supporting their use for prevention of some chronic nasal problems and relief of some nasal symptoms....that being said, from experience at home I STRONGLY caution users of netipots as you can accidentally cause problem with your eustachian tube and be in excruciating ear pain for days on end. It happened to my girlfriend and has been reported by a good number of other users...yet it still seems that netipot are one of the few things coming out of "alt med" to gain acceptance of the medical community...not sure why they seem to overlook the seeming high incident of side effect though

I have some kind of neti pot where you actually can apply pressure (it's made out of plastic and you can squeeze it - but you can just let the water flow, if you want). Even when applying pressure, I never had ear problems. And to me, it doesnt feel like drowning at all. Yeah, its weird having water flow through your head, but one gets used to it.

It feels like drowning if too much water is going though at one time or you have congestion at the time of rinsing. An extra strong mint before rinsing can help open up the airways. You need to be very careful not to put too much pressure on, any water that gets lodged in your sinuses can lead to infection.

I got yesterday & tried it last night. It wasn't that bad, except it made my eyes water a bit. Also, on the second side, the solution went mostly in my mouth & it made me gag a small. But otherwise i didn't notice much difference as far as my congestion or breathing or "clean" feeling.

tromwindows, if it runs into your mouth, you have to tilt your head more/less. Just keep experimenting.

I've been using mine off and on because I've been stuffed up since winter began. I'm putting xylitol, along with sea salt, in mine lately because I read somewhere that it kills germs or something.

But I feel like most of the water is staying in my head. Some trickles out, but damn lately it's been kind of scary. But this is the best thing to watch if you are considering using one or if you do already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYeR4PJSDKc WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. Yeah if I'm already congested, it can go in and not come out, and that sucks. It seems often that I have a dry congestion that cannot be blown out. Worries me. Its only happened a few times, but still. Also, I eventually figured out how to snort it back to help with post nasal drip but it isn't long term help at all. I found out my post nasal drip that never stops is related to my apparent "silent reflux" in all these years when I had the symptoms. So post nasal drippers, check into it. I usually enjoy using it though! Sometimes it doesn't seem to help it as much but that might be my new meds. Didn't know about waiting an hour though, so I will need to take that into consideration.

I know that at least in the morning there will NOT be time for using boiled water unless i save some aside when I make my tea. Then I will risk buring myself. Oh the conundrum. I worry I will never do it if I fear the amoebas.

Keep some boiled and cooled water in a bottle and just mix it with the boiled water/salt mix in the mornings.

Or just leave the boiled water in the pot from the night before and turn on the burner again for a few seconds.
