where on earth does one find "chocolate extract" ???? its an "optional" ingredient in the VCTOTW red velveteen cupcakes but i thought i would be able to find it at whole foods but i could not.
also what in the world is and where would you find ROOT BEER extract?!?!?!?
i found a recipe online the other day somewhere for root beer float cupcakes but i stopped reading after i saw i needed root beer extract
that wasnt at whole foods either :-P

Sometimes I see them in the baking sections of very comprehensive or more luxury-ended grocery stores, but your basic Safeway or whatever doesn't tend to have them. Mail-order is probably the best bet.

some non-WF health food stores have a decent selection. That's where I found Flavorganics chocolate extract but some of the other extracts I wanted to try (butterscotch being one) weren't vegan.

You can try TJ Maxx and Marshall's too. They're kind of hit or miss, but I've gotten chocolate extract, raspberry extract, peppermint extract etc there before. I think they buy from Williams Sonoma or something.
Otherwise, I second the kitchen or baking specialty store recommendation. I wonder if Michael's or Jo Anns or some of those big craft stores would carry them?

Market Basket has root beer extract. (At least the one in Chelsea does.)

There's a great import store on 7th Ave. in brooklyn south of that spice shop on 5th that has a great extract selection as well as bulk bins and it also run by lovely people. They sometimes have homemade rosewater that is fab.

Chocolate Extract I've seen at my co-op. Root Beer I've seen at Hannaford and Price Chopper. McCormick makes it.

also, check your craft store because they usually have a cake decoration section that may have such extracts.

i get my extracts at fantes in philly. but their supplier is lorann oils, which you can order from directly. their extracts are really strong, too, so you can get away with using a little bit less

Strangely, Walmart has the most extensive selection of extracts around here. But I made my own chocolate extract with vodka and cocoa nibs. I found root beer flavoring somewhere (the dreaded big box store above?) It wasn't real extract but it worked in the recipe I had.

is it pretty much the same thing? Dang - I just checked my maple and it is maple flavor as well. I bought it at WF 2 weeks ago. They had a sale on extracts and I bought a few but I didn't look at the label very carefully. I used it to make Maple Walnut cookies and they were delicious!
