I was thinking it would be a good idea for all us yarnies to have a thread specifically for giving/receiving advice about what yarns people like (or hate) to use, since it can be challenging to find good vegan yarn (at least it is for me!).
I'll start with a request for advice. I'm looking for
(a) good rainbow yarn - not just multi-color yarn, but yarn that actually has all the colors of the rainbow, in order. Red Heart Mexicana has great colors, but the fiber quality (Super Saver cheapo acrylic) is not so great. I've seen Bernat Mosaic online, which has a few colorways that look promising, but I'm anxious about dropping dough on yarn I haven't petted firsthand, and no local store sells it. Has anyone used it? Can you tell me about it? Any other suggestions for rainbows?
(b) good sock yarn! what do you use for socks?

I haven't used the Mosaic yet, but we sell it at the store and it feels really nice! Not like the Red Heart Super Saver at all. We keep it in an area with our more fancy yarn, so I assume that's a really good sign too XD I was hoping to buy some soon to make a hat and scarf with it.

i bought some of the rainbow mosaic that (i think) you're talking about. i haven't figured out what i'm making out of it yet, but it feels nice for a cheaper acrylic.
i love love love berroco comfort. for pretty much anything. it's a really nice yarn and it's not crazy expensive.

I've never felt deprived since going vegan over 7 years ago. Deprived of anything in the food department. I felt like crying once in my LYS because I couldn't find much of anything that wasn't wool and silk.
I like the Bernat Mosaic. It has mixed reviews on Ravelry. Of coarse wool users may slam it but I'm really happy with it. The skein I had didn't break and had no knots in it. The Calypso colorway is nice but not 100% rainbow. I didn't order any of the Psychedelic colorway.
I don't knit socks but bought some Berocco comfort sock for a project. I just wish their were more colors.

Do you guys have a favourite place for ordering Berocco comfort sock online? My LYS doesn't carry it. I'm pretty new to ordering yarn online.

I'm always nervous at the thought of ordering yarn online because I like to feel it in person at a yarn store. But I've heard so many good things about Comfort I think I'm just going to go for it. I finally have a circular needle long enough to learn magic loop, but no sock yarn. I must remedy this.

their multis are pretty, but i do with they had more solids. especially since the rest of the comfort line comes in about a billion colors.

I've been lusting after some quo vadis sock yarn for years. One day.

Is Hobby Lobby's acrylic - repackaged Red heart? It is bundled the same but totally different colors and a bit nicer feel. They had glitter yarn and rainbow yarn!
For inexpensive acrylic I love Vanna's Choice!

KnitPicks has a new acrylic I want to try out. Their yarns haven't let me down yet.

http://www.patonsyarns.com/product.php? ... ew&SPP=999 - Looks like they've got a rainbow multi! I've used this yarn for making baby projects and mitts before, and it's nice and squishy/soft (click 'all' to show all colors, it's at the bottom).

Researching yarn colors on Ravelry is my second favorite feature of the site after patterns of coarse. Because I buy most of my yarn online, I can get a better color idea off the different pictures and completed projects on Ravelry. Also for those looking for specific yarns online, Google the specific yarn, not yarn shops. There are good online retailers who sell Berocco Comfort Sock yarn.
