i think the point of the "joke" was that they would give them a real hot dog if they came out since you know living with vegetarians would be awful since they cant eat a real hot dog......or something.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I dunno how many shows have had that "joke" with the hot dog and veg*n kids with obnoxiously veg*n parents. Even if you're gonna give your kid something non-veg*n--which I hope you wouldn't, I would hope hot dogs would be one of the last things on your list!

seriously why do people jump straight to hot dogs? blech! i dont think omni parents should feed kids hot dogs those things are just BAD for you.
if i was gonna feed my kids something non-vegan id let them eat a non vegan cupcake or something at someone's bday part.

It was great how they took the sit-com formula of the misunderstanding reinforced by ambiguous dialog, led us down the garden path of Phil getting himself in deeper and deeper, and then just had him realize what had happened at the end without any serious consequences for anyone, rather than having Claire walk in on them kissing and being all "LUUUUUUU-CYYYYYYY!" Well played, Modern Family. Well played.
