My cat has been acting really weird for the past 2 days. In the mornings and late at night he keeps sitting by the doors/windows and keeps crying, like he wants to go outside (he's an indoor cat). He also won't eat any of his food in the morning, he just walks away and keeps up his howling. It's really strange for him to not eat his food. He loves to eat and usually eats his food right away and then tries to eat everyone else's food. Other than those things, he seems okay, so I don't think he's sick or anything.

Is he neutered? Could there be a female in heat in the area? Has he lost his mobile phone, maybe he thinks it went out in the trash?

This is what I'm thinking.

I was thinking the same thing! Toms can smell females for miles! Believe me at one point this summer I had 3 females in heat!

Our cat has been neutered for 8+ years, but he had about 2 years of "freedom" before we got him. He did this exact thing when we moved to a place where a) he was on the first floor and b) there was a girl cat wandering around in our yard. Just yowled and yowled and wouldn't leave the back door.

Have you tried feeding him a piece of reeeeeeeally good food, something he would jump through hoops to eat before? If he snarfs that right up, I don't think you need to worry.

is he not eating or just not eating when he usually does? It sounds like he's been seeing another cat or even a bird who'd been harassing him through the window maybe?
I guess the default response is to take him to a vet and watch his food/water/liter box for anything unusual?

Yes, he is neutered. Maybe he just smells another cat outside? Every once in a while a feral cat shows up. He seems to be acting a little more normal today.
