SHI (strengthening health institute) is a macrobiotic school/kitchen in northern liberties. I'm newly vegan, and definitely going to take a course. I'm curious about people's experiences there or just with macrobiotics in general.

thanks!

I've never heard of SHI. Please let us know how you enjoy the class. I'm not particularly interested in macrobiotics these days, but I do appreciate a good macro-inspired meal.

To supplement your food shopping, I recommend Essene Market. They make macrobiotic desserts and sell a lot of useful food staples (umeboshi plums, shoyu, miso, lots of bulk grains, rhapsody brand tempeh--which rules, fresh tofu inc. brand tofu, etc)

i worked at essene back in 1999, but that's as far as i go.

i did suggest my mom look into it after her 2nd bout of cancer, but i don't think she's gotten very far with it.

I did some private cheffing for a macro lady so I may be able to answer some questions if you have any. She was very militant and rather insane but I really did enjoy making her food. It's an extremely healthy way to eat but I don't think it's for the exact reasons that they believe (she used to make me scoop her rice vertically and spread it horizontally to balance out the yin and the yang and swore if she took in too much yin energy her knees knocked together.) If you are looking for solid health advice I'd say read Becoming Vegan which is written by two Registered Dietitians or read The China Study. Those read rather like text books though (just to warn you.) I have a simple Macro book called "The Self Healing Cookbook" that breaks down the simple theories behind Macro pretty well that I would recommend picking up. Good luck!!!

Very cool, thank you!
I just started reading the china study, as well as the food revolution and eating animals.
From what i'm learning, there are some macrobiotic practitioners that are super rigid and orthodox, and then others (like what SHI in philly appears to be) that are more adaptive and open and flexible, if not simply as a means to remain relevant to contemporary young people.
I gotta say, though, I AM interested in the idea of preparing food according to its' energetic makeup. Nothing crazy, just more common sense.
Anyway, thanks for the help!
