Texas VegFest 2012

We've secured a location for the first Texas VegFest in Austin! The fest will be March 31 at Fiesta Gardens West End. It's a really pretty location with a giant pavilion and lots of grass right on Ladybird Lake. It's still a ways away, but I'm too excited to wait telling everyone I know.

The First Statewide All Plant-Based Festival Announced for Spring 2012

AUSTIN, TX: Texas is going to get a whole lot healthier next March thanks to the Texas VegFest, an outdoor festival promoting and celebrating plant-based diets for a healthier, more sustainable future.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 31st, 2012 and will be held at Fiesta Gardens in Austin.

Festival organizers were moved to create this event after discovering that Texas is leading the nation in negative health statistics, especially that five Texas cities were named in the top ten "Fattest Cities in the U.S." and that diabetes is present in 10.3% of Texan adults. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Throughout the event, Texas VegFest plans to demonstrate how a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains can be effective at preventing and reversing medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. Participants will learn that in addition to its powerful health-promoting aspects, a plant-based diet can be both delicious and easy to incorporate into one's lifestyle.

"We're so excited to announce the date and location for this year's event. Our goal is to raise awareness about the benefits of a plant-based diet for everyone and to have a lot of fun!" says Molly Frisinger, festival Outreach Director.

Texas VegFest is currently seeking sponsors and vendors to participate in the event, as well as accepting applications for presenters at the fest.

The event will host cooking demonstrations, fun activities for kids, food sampling, product vendors, restaurant booths, music and entertainment.

We've been planning a trip to visit my grandparents in FW soon, and while I know Austin is hardy close to FW, I've been wanting to visit for so long! I'll have to talk to the husband and see if there is any way we could make this happen, because I would LOVE to go!

I am way overdue for an Austin trip even though my favorite reason for visiting is gone now (r.i.p. esme b!). I am going to see how much it costs and maybe I can do it. The fest is only one day, but I think most hotels make you book Fri/Sat, right?

Hotels will let you book whenever you want. We're working on getting a block of rooms reserved right now, if that's something you'd be interested in.

How is this coming along? I saw a couple hotels listed on the site..is it the one for 145/night..because that's quite a bit! We are hoping to stay with a friend, but just curious!

Yes, the block of rooms is the 145/night hotel. It's expensive, but for a prime location. Unfortunately, there is another event going on that weekend which is driving hotel costs way up. LAME!

I would also recommend the Extended Stay America downtown, if they have any rooms left! Those were going for about $115/night.

The further you get away from downtown, the cheaper the hotel rates... but the further you have to travel to get to the fest. Let us know if you need help finding something!
