We need an official earthquake thread so we can all jump excitedly/terrifiedly to it after a big 'un.

So without further ado: this morning, a 4.0 at 5:33am, epicenter in Berkeley. Anyone else feel it? I woke up, gasped, and promptly fell back asleep.

Pfft. A 4? We get 'em bigger than that in Virginia.

I kid. Hopefully everyone is all right and there isn't any damage. At least you guys are built up to code.

There was a 6.1 somewhere in Argentina this morning. Haven't heard any more details, but that isn't very unusual for that area.

it woke me up too. But when I got up this morning I couldn't tell if it really happened or if it was just a dream.

I was only half asleep when it hit so I felt it for sure.

I woke up right before it hit because I could hear the rumbling. I don't know if it's this old house itself or where it sits, but I don't ever remember being able to hear earthquakes for so long before they actually hit. That big series last year I swear I could hear almost 10 seconds out.

When it actually hit, I just thought, well, it's dark and I'm blind without contacts, so I'm just doing to pull the covers over my head to at least protect myself from falling plaster. I'm totally going to die when a big one comes.

That's actually what you're supposed to do if you're in bed! Curl up into a ball and put the pillow over your head.

Yep, I slept RIGHT through it. This is not the first time I've slept through one, either. The only quake I've felt since moving out here was the one back in the fall that happened to fall on Earthquake Readiness Day, or whatever the crepe that was.

I am probably on the list of people who will die when a real earthquake hits. When the little one hit in the fall, I didn't take any cover because I was too busy directing my students to take cover and so on, and any that hit when I'm asleep, I just sleep through. Oh well!

Don't worry, DC, playing dead is the best thing to do in an Earthquake. Most Earthquakes will sniff your seemingly lifeless body and then move on.

Also, Mel, I think you live twice as close to the epicenter as I do.

I felt it! I was awake but still in bed. I was actually debating whether to get up or try to sleep some more, and the earthquake decided for me!

I totally forgot about it until I read the first post, but I did wake up enough to feel it.

3.1 last night in Berkeley! One dog barked and the other dog slept through it.

I was sitting on the couch and everything wiggled. I just assumed there was something crazy going on, like too much partying or whatever, and then my bf gave me a funny look and told me it was an earthquake.

No wonder I've slept through all the other ones!

Apparently there was an even bigger one, a 3.2, at 1am in Berkeley this morning. I slept right the eff through it.

Is anyone else a little disconcerted that USGS is shut down because of this ongoing gubbermint BS? If a big one hit tomorrow, how much emergency response would we get, if any at all? I'm going to be listening very carefully in 2.5 hours to make sure we still get our weekly tsunami drill.

Considering that most people think that the USGS and NOAA (and our weather satellites) are useless and a waste of money, it shouldn't matter at all...(yeah, sarcasm)

Actually though, the USGS coordinates earthquake reports, but there are many, many private seismographs around the world. Most of the laser and GPS wiring of San Andreas is in conjunction with several universities--those would all still be running.

I'd be more concerned with what FEMA is doing than the USGS in terms of disaster preparedness.

I know, I live pretty close to UC Berkeley and remember visiting their seismograph as a kid.

That sounds amazing. We had one at VT, but it wasn't very elaborate, though I suppose it does the job.

OK, y'all, time for your Sunday morning stories.

As I do with all middle-of-the-night earthquakes, I woke up, thought "woah! Earthquake!" Then put my arms around each dog (one on each side of me, because I sleep in heaven) and immediately fell back asleep and didn't remember until someone asked me about it the next day.

I didn't even realize how big it was until Kittee texted me to see if I was ok! I figured it must have been pretty big if it made the Portland news. According to my mom, there is now a run on Napa valley wines. Ah, good old fashioned tragedy speculation.

Growing up, I slept through pretty much every earthquake. Once in my 20s I was in a bed with my boyfriend and I was like "stop shaking the bed!" and he said "I'm not!" and then we went to sleep. Turned out to have been an earthquake. Growing up in CA, I feel pretty lucky to never have been in a serious earthquake. I even moved away from Olympia, WA, right before they had a big quake there.
