I'm wanting to make the boyfriend a birthday cake involving white chocolate, and I was wondering if any of you know which (if any) white chocolate is any good for melting/baking with. This probably goes without saying, but I obviously mean vegan white chocolate.

I tried making muffins with Plamil white chocolate stuff once, and the chocolate chunks melted into a clear substance in the oven, then dried all hard and plasticky, almost, when it cooled.

I have some of those white chocolate buttons, which I may experiment with, but I've been having trouble finding them in most places recently.

So yeah, any suggestions appreciated, as most bars of vegan white chocolate tend to be pretty expensive, and I'll probably end up needing quite a bit, so I can really afford to try and try until I get it right.

I've baked the buttons into muffins and cookies and they've worked fine.

I've made "peanut butter cups in white peanut butter cups" with those white chocolate buttons and they turned out great (although they turned out pretty big). Check at the Free From section in Tesco or Sainsbury, I think I recall someone saying that sainsbury was switching to their own brand and hence selling off the regular ones so that might have something to do with your trouble finding them?

The buttons are the only usable ones in baking - Plamil and Organica do bad things when they melt.

Sweet! I read somewhere that they were stopping distribution of them in the UK for some reason, but I hope that's untrue.

I can no longer find the white ones in Sainsburys, Waitrose or H&B, although I have seen the milk ones. But, I did find them in Tesco (though, unfortunately there's not a big one as close as I'd like to me) and a local indie HFS, so hopefully they'll continue selling them.

It's a real shame if they do - they're the only good white vegan chocolate to exist in more than a decade.

Anyone know the whole story?
