Hello vegan NYCers. I have a friend that is getting a job in the Bronx, and she was looking for a place to live that was relatively safe and reasonable commuting distance. She's also vegan, though I'm not sure how relevant a detail that is, but vegan friendly is obviously preferable.

Thanks in advance, and if any of you need info on Saint Louis (for some God-forsaken reason) then feel free to pester me.

Thanks for the information! I want to live as close to work as possible. The nearest subway stop to work is Mosholu Pkwy.

I will look at the 2 places you mentioned.

Very much appreciated! Thanks !!!!

probably not Inwood, then.

Unfortunately I agree...unfortunate because I like Inwood/Washington Heights. Due to the subway line to Mosholu Pkwy, you're probably best off living on the Upper East Side in the Mid 70s-Low/Mid 90s. The further east from the subway station the more affordable the apartment and the whole neighborhood is very safe albeit not terribly exciting. On the Upper East there's Candle Cafe, Candle 79, V-note, and Gobo. On the weekends you can go south for other vegetarian restaurants and they seem to be heavily stacked on the east side of Manhattan.

i don't know what your budget is like, but even if you're living in one of the less prestigious neighborhoods and sharing an apartment, rents can be wallet-drainingly expensive in Manhattan. maybe you want to consider Westchester County somewhere along the Harlem line of the Metro North railroad, which makes a stop right near the subway station you mentioned. i don't know much about the area or its towns or the cost of the train, but i thought i'd put it out there as an alternative, because the cost of living in the city can be higher than a lot of people might expect.

ETA: Upper West Side or Washington Heights (maybe) or could work too if you took the B or D to Bedford Park Blvd. it's only about half a mile from Mosholu.

and i'm going to go out on a limb and suggest you consider west Harlem as well. i looked at a place on 142nd street a few blocks from Riverbank State Park, and the neighborhood felt just as safe as any other i'd looked at. it was summer and there were people sitting on their front stoop and kids riding bikes in the street. i very likely would have lived there if the rent were a bit lower and the bedroom offered had a window.

my advice to you is to figure out your maximum commute time/distance and your upper limit for rent, and keep an open mind about all the places within those parameters. you're not guaranteed to be safe anywhere you live, so it's really down to your comfort level - go see the neighborhood around some of your top picks, and ask yourself if you'd feel okay walking however far it is from your subway stop in the dark and take it from there.
