I was passing by the Tutti Frutti on Telegraph in Berkeley, which I had never even noticed before, when I saw a sign in their window screaming "soy bean frozen yogurt". I inquired with what seemed to be the owner, who confirmed that it's suitable for vegans (the website says so too, although they don't list ingredients). Having never been inside a self serve froyo place before, I was kind of confused, but the guy was really helpful and explained that it's only the "soy bean" flavor which is dairy-free, and that he's hoping they'll add more flavors soon. The froyo had a light vanilla/strong soy flavor and wasn't too sweet, and the texture was kind of crystallized but still creamy. Granted, you'd be supporting a shop which sells lots of dairy, but I think it's cool that an international chain recognized the need for a non-dairy option. And it wasn't expensive - I got about a cup of yogurt with a few spoonfuls of fruit topping for $2.15.

Dang! Thanks for the heads up Erin. There are two locations in Oakland too! I'll be biking there next warm weekend that we get.

Awesome! I see there's one fairly close to Golden Gate park. I'll be stopping there for some recovery yogurt after bike rides in the summer.

I love how their front page is so effusive about the soy yogurt. It's even in the title of their home page - "Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt - Soy Yogurt!!!"
I'm a little scared by the "non-fat" aspect, but since Erin thought it was pretty good, and if you can add PB to it, it should get pretty creamy.

PB is an interesting choice for a second flavor, and yeah, it's weird that it would be non-fat. The regular kind that I tried didn't taste non-fat, although I don't eat ice cream very often so I might not be the best judge.

We went this weekend! We happened to pass by it on a walk and we got some with fruit and almonds and mochi bits on top. Pretty damn good! It was kind of hard not to get the like, gallon sized bucket of it. :P

I went to the Tutti Frutti in Santa Clara and they didn't have it. The did have watermelon sorbet though and it was delicious.
There are like 6 Tutti Fruttis in south bay. Apparently soy is coming soon to the Sunnyvale location but I don't know about the others. It's going to be *such* a chore to go to each one and find out in person. Poor me!

I tried it this weekend! I got fruit and carob chips on top. I've never really liked carob, but chilled in the froyo, they just tasted like drugstore-quality chocolate. I thought it was pretty darn tasty and I liked that it wasn't super sweet. It reminded me of going to Sizzler as a little kid and getting their soft serve and covering it with chocolate chips. Not super creamy, hand-churned, artisan shiitake, but very satisfying in an ice cream truck crepe kind of way.

I got some of this the other day! To be fair, I have never had dairy frozen yogurt before so I don't have a comparison, but I thought it was pretty good.

I got a cup this past weekend, it was good, well good enough.
I did how ever find the spiel on the flyer they had by the door to be ridiculous
"Some other soy providers use GMOs that may damage the digestive tract, brain, skin and nerves. Others use gluten that may cause tiredness, anxiety and stress. Tutti Frutti does not use GMOs or Gluten, so our customers can enjoy a truly healthful and refreshing cup of soy frozen yogurt, made only from soy grown in the U.S."
I also found it a little ironic that the Green project its connected to is to help soy farmers in Afghanistan yet they source only US grown soy for the product...
but would I by it again? Heck yes.

Do all the vegans live in Piedmont?
I walked past it today and had literally never noticed the place before but the window signs drew me in. A very flustered 13yo boy was trying to fix the machine that held the soy version. I got out of him a confirmation that the soy stuff was vegan but he seemed like he was kid-style freaking out so I decided not to stare at him try to fix the machine and just come back.
We can casually go for Fro-Yo now! We're just like people!
