what is up with the prices of hotels in Chicago? I mean, YIKES! Maybe I am out of touch because I haven't been there in a while but they seem so much more pricey than NYC.
any tips on a lesser expensive neighborhood to stay in?

i have never gotten a hotel in chicago but it seems like all the hotels are either by o'hare (so far away from anything but the airport unless you're going to a convention out that way) or downtown (where everything is too expensive and there's nothing i want to go to except some museums anyway). try Airbnb! i've heard good things. you can rent out a room or an apartment for way cheaper than a hotel room. what is bringing you to chicago?

Thanks for the airbnb rec. I never heard of it; but it's very similar to VRBO which I use a lot. I already found some possibilities that are way cheaper than a hotel!!
I am planning in advance of an October trip to see the Notre Dame football game at Soldier field and then will spend about 3 or 4 days seeing the sites and eating incredible vegan food!
Thanks again!

last time i was there i stayed in a hostel overnight because we were dropping off a friend at the airport at odd hours (driving from Madison, WI). A brief search tells me it was probably HI Chicago and it was nice enough and ridiculously affordable.

I am not sure if they are more or less, but what about a B&B?

I'd check out hostels and non-chain hotels. Are you driving? How far from downtown are you willing to be? The suburbs are often cheaper. The Margarita Inn in Evanston is awesome, and cheaper than a lot of options. But far from down town.

Priceline! I just got a room at the Hyatt on Wacker Drive for $75 (inc taxes & fees). The downside is that you have to wait until a day or two before you're going. But there are always rooms near the airport if that falls through.
